My New Padawan

Now that you have faced the trials, you have been granted the ability to take on a padawan. The question you must ask yourself is “how do I teach someone new?” Star Wars: Destiny has changed since its inception. It has evolved over the last year to become a game that has more opportunities to bring in the fringe fans and get them addicted to the fun and excitement only the Star Wars universe can bring. So where do we begin?

Three Reasons Ewoks Are The New Meta

Who else remembers the first time they witnessed the horrific power of the tribe of space bears known as Ewoks? I can recall watching our bootleg VHS copy of Return of the Jedi and being amazed at the sheer volume of these fuzzy marauders. While Wicket stole Leia’s heart (and mine) with his adorable innocence, my true love for these creatures grew from their ability to come together as a unit to accomplish both a thriving community and a fearsome offensive.

Unsung Heroes | 6 Cards You May Want to Reconsider

One reason that Star Wars Destiny is such a popular game is how quickly the game evolves. As the meta game ebbs and flows with new sets, errata and card adjustments, players are continually seeking new character pairings and spicy combos. When the meta game becomes stagnant, the player experience becomes stale, especially when characters or upgrades are overpowered. Despite the dominance of Snoke, Watto, and Force Storm in recent organized play events, players must find ways to work around these popular choices in tournaments or even at the local table. Even with the recent Rules Reference Update, I think we will still see a healthy dose of Force Storm, Snoke and Watto in decks moving forward. For your consideration are six cards from standard format that I think you should consider using when the opportune moment arises. These cards aren’t top dogs of the meta because they are either too expensive or too reliant on a specific sequence to occur with any amount of reliability but they might just be the clutch play you need at the right time.

Seasonal Kits Are Awesome

Open Play Nights (FFG is on the Right Track)

Recently, my friendly local game store received their seasonal kits from Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) to support Open Play events. I was really impressed with the promos when our local tournament organizer showed me some of them. FFG made good choices about which cards to print! He asked me if I would be willing to run Open Play (OP) events for our store, and I agreed. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I scheduled our first event; was anyone going to come out for an event that wasn’t an official “tournament?” Was there any interest in playing games without the competitive atmosphere that comes with a formal structure?

Reviewing Hero Blue Spoilers From the FFG Live Stream – Yoda Arrives!

I’m Feeling (Hero) Blue!

What a fun live stream! I always enjoy tuning in when Jeremy and the FFG crew publicize Star Wars: Destiny. Watching new cards get spoiled is the most exciting part of the lead up to a new set. There’s a lot to dissect from this stream (Ewoks!), but in this brief spoiler article I’d like to specifically discuss what’s happening for Hero Blue in Spark of Hope. There are some things to be excited for!

How do I start?

On Facebook I have been seeing a lot of people putting up: “Just starting to play, where do I start?” This is both exciting because of the influx of new blood; but also a difficult question. The Star Wars: Destiny we play now is different than the what we started playing 7 sets and 1 cycle ago. When we first started playing this game, it was  characters, supports, and upgrades. You had those types of decks like Han Solo (AW46)/Rey (AW38) that were shield crazy and difficult to push through. Then the evolution to the Bala (AW19) trinity that had everyone frustrated. Then the invention of FN-2199 (SR2) that wanted everyone to flip a table or two.

Balance of the Force – Episode III: Order Has Been Restored to the Galaxy

Having recently competed in the Malmö GQ, there was little surprise regarding the balance of Snoke (WF4), Watto (CV38), and Force Storm (CV14). For Snoke and Watto, the consistency with which they were able to play the most powerful supports in the game was undeniably broken. Many players at the Malmö GQ recognized this and brought a variation of the Snoke/Watto/First Order Stormtrooper (CV20) deck. Many players also brought Palpatine (CV2)/Wat Tambor (CV22) to take advantage of the similarly consistent Force Storm (CV14). I myself fell victim to the Force Storm “one-turn-kill” at the GQ.

Balance of the Force – Episode I

Balance of the Force (Will It Be Before or After Origins?)

It is my opinion that almost any deck is beatable, so I tend to be hesitant with Balance of the Force changes. That said, the game is at its best when the meta is open enough to allow diversity. With any potential Balance of the Force, FFG has to consider whether the meta is actually in need of a change. Is one deck dominating all challengers? Is the game hemorrhaging players because of the negative player experience (NPE) associated with a card? In our current meta, one deck is not dominating all events. It IS clear to me that one character is still a step above many others that see play. I’m not convinced the NPE factor of this meta is overly corrosive, and many games are quite fun. I do believe, though, that some cards are deserving of a second look by FFG.
