My New Padawan

Now that you have faced the trials, you have been granted the ability to take on a padawan. The question you must ask yourself is “how do I teach someone new?” Star Wars: Destiny has changed since its inception. It has evolved over the last year to become a game that has more opportunities to bring in the fringe fans and get them addicted to the fun and excitement only the Star Wars universe can bring. So where do we begin?

When you get a new player to try out this game, find out what kind of player they might be. It is easy to give a newbie one of our extra decks and tell them good luck. However, what is more useful is to let them help build their own deck. Doing this forces the younger players to read the cards and allows them to question if they are good. Not only question us, the teachers, but also themselves. We can bounce back with “Why do you think this card will work?”

Beginner’s Collection

An easy answer to this is that they buy the booster packs and/or a booster box. Here is one of those outside-the box-ideas: we all have extras galore. What would it hurt to have them go through your extra commons, uncommons, and rares to help get them going? The strength of our community is our ability to see towards where we would like this game to go. At the end of the day, which would make us feel better, to have a closet full of unused extra cards or the ability to give someone a hand up to start their collection?

Collecting the cards is only the beginning. We need to also help plug the new people into sources that will help get them a basic understanding of how the game is played. Most of the time it can be accomplished by some practice games or even if they come and watch a FLGS event or tournament. We can show them the ideas behind how a turn goes, what it really means to play this back and forth game. The other way is through articles, videos and through real life playing. The articles help with basic strategies. It also gets people in the habit of doing research on what works and what doesn’t. I am a huge proponent of videos. The more I watch the more I learn, it doesn’t work for everyone but it does work for some.

Thank the Creators

Before you all start yelling “where did they find this moron!!” I know the quote is actually Maker. But what I want to talk about here are the Content Creators. The people behind the great videos and articles that we watch and read. You see without them, this game would be a little more difficult. Let’s be honest, this game owes a lot to the CCs that have worked hard to bring in people. Here at The Chance Cube, we strive to bring you as much great content as we can. Why do they do this? It is for the love of the games.

In future articles from me I hope to shine a brighter light on CCs and their contributions. The videos that these people make will help your young padawan get ready to face the Trials. Point them towards CCs so that they can find their rhythm. In the world of Star Wars: Destiny, there is no bigger prize than watching a new player become a well rounded player winning events. Content Creators are a key to unlocking our padawans potential.

Reading is FUNdemental

Articles can be dry, I hope this isn’t one of them. Sometimes we may not connect with a writers style. Reading can put some people to sleep, even if it the best stuff they have read. So how can I ask you to make your padawan read? Easy, it helps.

Reading is a good way to get information. When you aren’t sure what a good counter to a certain play is, do the research. Articles, Facebook, even asking friends is a good way to get much needed intel to make you a better player. Push yourself to read as much as you can. Watch for articles that catch your eye. See if there is something written about the best cards to put in a mono-Red deck. Then put that author to the test by trying it out. The people that write don’t have all the answers, but maybe they have an answer that you are looking for.

If our goal is to become a better player, then we must push ourselves outside of our comfort zone. Sometimes that means drinking an energy drink so we can push through an article or 4.

Bring them alive

Live playing is the easiest way to teach this game. Being able to help our friends through a game or two by going over the basics in a hands on game is great. Allowing our prodigy to get their hands on the cards and really start to see how they work. You see this game is, at the center, about out maneuvering your opponent. Showing the person that you are playing against that you have the answers.

What better way is there to teach deck building than to do it in person. With the actual cards on hand, we can show our student the ins and outs of the game. What is an event; what are the good supports; how many dice should I build into my deck? These and so many more questions can be answered by spending time with the new player. In the end, isn’t that one of the great side effects of table top games? Enjoying time with family and friends (new and old).

Be Generous

Wether you have been playing since the beginning or you have just started, be kind. It doesn’t matter how you are playing, Star Wars: Destiny is a game we all love. When you look back at your experiences, though, it isn’t the cards you’ll remember but the people you have met and played along the way. Do you want those people to view you as kind and fun to play against but very competitive? Or will people see you as a win at all costs and make things difficult player? Try being the first person—we here at The Chance Cube love to win, but it is always about community first.

  1. I run the collective commons box here in Minnesota, and we give new players so much new stuff and it’s all community donation driven. If you have a single store that you play at in your area, you may want to work with them to see if they can handle running a community box. Here, that’s not so easy, as we have 10+ stores in the area running weekly events.

The Destiny Council made a video about it last year, which goes over it in detail. Of course, I am biased because I am in it. 😀

    1. That is a great idea. I know that it has been fun sitting with the new players and helping them chose the cards they want. Bringing in and helping new players is my passion, so anything that you have found to work please let me know.
