12 Days of Destiny – Day 6

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Sixth Day of Destiny is devoted to everyone’s favorite fuzzy guerilla warriors.

On the Sixth Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…Six Ewoks A-Playing

We knew we would get Ewoks someday, but none of us were entirely certain what they would look like? How do you accurately represent both their individual frailty and their collective strength in Star Wars: Destiny? It was the same challenge as creating Gungans but they needed to be both individually even weaker and collectively more…competent. Enter two entirely novel concepts in Star Wars: Destiny – the sub 6 point character and diceless characters. At only 4 points apiece, 4 health, and featuring no dice, the design of the Ewoks certainly emphasized how weak and short lived they could be individually. But whether or not you’d be able to overwhelm the opponent with their numbers remained to be seen. I have to admit that I was skeptical at first. Sure it sounded like a fun thematic deck, but could a six-character, two-dice start (eChief Chirpa/4x Ewok Warrior + Set Aside 1x Ewok Warrior) actually compete? I was as surprised as anybody to see Mike Gemme take down the 2019 North American Championship with an Ewok deck! Granted, it turned out that 6 Ewoks wasn’t actually the ideal setup so Mike’s deck crucially swapped out an Ewok Warrior for a Hoth Trooper and bumped Chirpa down to one die to include the Armored Reinforcement plot and help guarantee the ability to end up in the Arena of Death – Naar Shaddaa at some point during the game. Since then, Ewoks have found themselves on the Restricted List with Arena of Death, but the deck isn’t entirely dead. I still see Ewok decks floating around, and locally we have one player that has had quite a bit of success with an Ewok/Gungan deck. So even though it never fully materialized as a competitive deck, today’s nod goes to the idea of a six Ewok deck which at least had some footing in the blogosphere for a hot minute.
