12 Days of Destiny – Day 5

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Fifth Day of Destiny revisits one of our favorite high dice count teams.

On the Fifth Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…the Five-Dice Villain Deck

In the early days of Destiny, decks were often two wide and usually featured a three to four starting dice pairing. Three wide teams were certainly possible and definitely present in the meta, but options were a bit limited as the small number of characters meant that many potential pairings for three wide decks weren’t synergistic and included both ranged and melee damage. Eventually, the release of subsequent sets left room for experimenting with three wide decks that boasted higher starting dice counts and better synergies. Specifically, the release of Empire at War gifted the world of Star Wars villains with Cienna Ree – Adept Pilot and the Five-Dice Villain deck. This deck was a variation of several three wide villain decks that featured Bala-Tik which had been popular since the early Awakenings meta (and peaked with decks like eBala-Tik/Jango Fett/FOST and eBala-Tik/FN-2199/Nightsister). Five Dice Villains was a cornucopia of awesome – it was a rainbow deck, had an incredible reset ability with Bala-Tik, offered a clutch die mitigation ability with Nightsister, and featured three sets worth of redeploy weapons. What was not to love? Sure there are many other five dice decks that deserve a mention here (shoutout to Gungans, Hero Vehicles, and others), but for my money, the eBala-Tik/eCienna Ree/Nightsister deck will always be my favorite. Here’s a sample deck list that I was fortunate to see expertly piloted to a Top 4 finish at the Austin, TX Regional tournament in 2017.
