12 Days of Destiny – Day 7

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Seventh Day of Destiny celebrates the most fundamental component of a CCG.

On the Seventh Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…Seven Types of Cards

When I first pitched this blog series, I described it as a series of twelve microblogs. But so far, and true to form for myself, they’ve all been longer than planned entries. So for today, I promise to keep it short. Our seventh day is going to focus on the seven different card types in Star Wars: Destiny – Battlefield, Character, Downgrade, Event, Plot, Support, and Upgrade. There’s a lot to say about each of these different card types, so instead of waxing poetic about each, I’m going to highlight my personal favorites and limit myself to only a single sentence describing why it’s my favorite.

Battlefield – Cargo Hold – Eravana
Though it never quite made the competitive waves that I had hoped/feared, I love everything about this completely chaotic battlefield (other than that it should have been limited to non-ability upgrades).

Character – Seventh Sister – Agile Inquisitor
Though there are so many good characters to choose from, none of them made us scrounge for as many copies of ID9 – Seeker Droid dice as Seventh Sister did.

Downgrade– Mind Extraction
If we knew how Recurring Nightmare worked then I might choose the first Downgrade with a die as my favorite, but we don’t so the award goes to Mind Extraction because I love the idea of stripping a character of its card text or even pulling off a sneaky Palpatine – Unlimited Power kill from hand.

Event – Easy Pickings
Oh okay, this one is almost too obvious, and trust me, I thought hard about some spicier options that I could mention, but there are few other cards for me that are as much of an autoinclude as this one, and who doesn’t love to watch as their opponent’s face goes from excitement to disappointment as soon as they roll into a double 2 ranged or 3 melee and you grab that resource?

Plot – Profitable Connections
At this point there are many more interesting plots that I could pick as my favorite, but at the end of the day, I just love starting with three resources so I’m sticking with likely my most used plot – Profitable Connections.

Support – Backup Muscle
There are a lot of different supports that I like and wanted to include here, but I’m going to have to stick with the one that gives me three unblockable damage for a single resource.

Upgrade – Force Throw
I find myself often shying away from Blue Ability upgrades since they’re expensive, don’t redeploy, and often don’t share a damage type with the characters you play them on, but I absolutely love Force Throw for all of the obvious reasons and included it in virtually every blue deck that I ran for the first year of the game.

That wasn’t really any shorter was it? Oh well, here’s to all seven card types and my favorite of each! Make sure to check back tomorrow and see what Day 8 brings us.
