12 Days of Destiny – Day 4

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Fourth Day of Destiny brings us everyone’s favorite Dark Lord of the Sith.

On the Fourth Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…Four Dominant Darths

Whether he was good or not, there was no way that Darth Vader – Sith Lord wasn’t going to be one of the most popular cards at the launch of Destiny. Everyone wanted to open a Vader. In fact, I remember Tiny Grimes throwing big cash around at our launch event trying to buy a Vader from a buddy that opened one. All before we really knew how good he would be. But for better or for worse, he wasn’t just good, he was great. The common sense pairing was to put him with a Tusken Raider which gave you access to yellow cards and a potentially huge ability if the Raider rolled in well. I personally always preferred him with Kylo Ren – Vader’s Disciple, but that was mostly because I only had one Vader die and I hated how anti-thematic a pairing of Vader and a Tusken was. No matter how you ran him though, he was a force to be reckoned with. I was surprised when FFG quickly dropped a second Darth Vader in Spirit of Rebellion, but it was exciting that Darth Vader – Dark Apprentice’s much lower point cost allowed for a much great diversity of pairings. Darth Vader – Terror to Behold is obviously much fresher in our collective memory and we know just how terrifying he can be to sit across from. So what awaits Darth Vader – Victor Leader? Will he prove to be as dominant as the three prior Darth Vaders or will this be FFG’s first misstep with Vader? I think we’ll have to wait for the rest of Covert Missions to be released in order to really know, but I suspect that he’ll work his way into something interesting, especially if Piloting is a commonly used mechanic.
