12 Days of Destiny – Day 11

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Eleventh Day of Destiny highlights all of different places that cards can be found during a game of Destiny.

On the Eleventh Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…Eleven Areas of Play

Eleven turned out to be a bit tricky, but as it so happens there are actually eleven different areas of play in Star Wars: Destiny so I’ll review each just briefly below:

In Play Areas

Battlefield
You know, that place we came to play! Do you take your battlefield and give your opponent shields? When is the right time to claim each round? There’s a lot that goes into properly utilizing the Battlefield and you’d be remiss to ignore those decisions.

Characters, Plots, and Played Cards
All of the “permanents” (to borrow a Magic: The Gathering term) that you bring to the game (other than the Battlefield) and/or play during the game go here. Characters, Plots, Supports, Upgrades, Downgrades – everything! The Battlefield is only excluded from this section because it changes possession during the game and is therefore given it’s own area.

Dice Pool
The place where you display all of those beautiful damage sides that you rolled. Or in my case, where you stare at a row full of blanks and wonder keep managing to be on the wrong side of “statistically improbable.”

Resources
Keep these displayed, please! Make sure that your resource pool is clearly visible to your opponent so that they neither have to ask how many resources you have nor get surprised when you pull a hidden one out.

Out-of-Play Areas

Hand
Whether you’re stressing over whether or not to pitch your last card to reroll, or you’ve managed to nearly draw your entire deck in an OTK combo, your hand is the cards that you hold… in your hand.

Deck
The big stack of cards that you draw from and hope not to run out of. In Destiny, your deck represents both all of the options of cards that you have to play as well as a win condition for your opponent so be judicious about how you use it.

Discard Pile
The graveyard of good stuff that you watch grow throughout the game but rarely get to pull stuff out of. All played Events and/or discarded “permanent” cards go here when they leave play.

Queue
One of the most often misunderstood zones in Destiny, the Queue is the face up pile into which played cards go until they are resolved.

Dice On Cards
When your dice aren’t in the pool, they are placed on their matching cards. I have to admit that I usually just pile all of a character’s character and upgrade dice on their card, but technically, each die should return to its matching card.

Set Aside Zone
Some decks allow you to bring “set aside” cards and dice to the game that might be used later. Additionally, some cards are sent to the “set aside” zone during play. You can think of this as being like the Exile zone if you’re familiar with Magic: The Gathering.

Supply
The Supply is filled with all of the tokens that you wish you had. Usually, these are gained when you resolve a die side or effect that adds a token of that type to your characters (shields and damage) or resource pool (resources). But occasionally, cards will instruct you to use tokens from the Supply in other ways (like adding Shield tokens to Bubble Shield for example).
