12 Days of Destiny – Day 2

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. Finally, I know that the Twelve Days of Christmas actually start on Christmas Day, but I thought it would be more fun to lead up to Christmas instead.

On the Second Day of Christmas, FFG Gave to Me…Two Daring Designers

I’m sure everyone has their share of disagreements with different design elements in Destiny, but I think we can all agree that the vision that went into creating the game and the continued efforts to reinvigorate it by introducing bold new mechanics are impressive to say the least. Whoever let Lukas Litzsinger design a CCG for Fantasy Flight Games that featured chunky, colorful dice was undoubtedly risking a great deal to do so. But it worked, and has given us several years of incredible Star Wars experiences. I sincerely appreciate the incredible amount of time and effort that went into designing such an elegant, novel game. So hats off to Lukas Litzsinger for designing what has probably been my favorite game since the fall of 2016. I was obviously sad to see him go to Wizards of the Coast and more than skeptical about who would inherit the mantle.

Introduce Jeremy Zwirn. Fantasy Flight really went all out on this one and put some of their best talent into the driver’s seat of Destiny. Jeremy kept the game feeling familiar but wasn’t afraid to introduce some big changes that swerved away from some of Lukas’s original “rules” (I’m looking at you, 4-point characters).

Together, I think these two have more than earned the description of “daring,” and I’m excited for more new ideas to make their way into the game. Just as a footnote, I want to say that I would be remiss not to acknowledge the rest of the design team and the playtesters that help make the game a success. Without their efforts, we obviously wouldn’t have the game that we do and we appreciate each one of them.
