12 Days of Destiny – Day 1

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. Finally, I know that the Twelve Days of Christmas actually start on Christmas Day, but I thought it would be more fun to lead up to Christmas instead.

On the First Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…a Matt Holland in a Pear Tree?

Okay, that’s not a strong start, and I promise that I’ll stick more to the traditional Twelve Days of Christmas alliteration naming convention in the future, but our partridge in a pear tree for 2019 HAS to be the beloved Matt Holland. Though his job is theoretically limited to Organized Play now (which has seen some improvements this year), the most major change that he Matt seems to bring to the community is communication. At no point in the history of Star Wars: Destiny has there been such clear and rapid communication between FFG and the community. And we certainly aren’t used to feeling as “heard” as we do by Matt. Whether he’s helping to clarify rules, respond to player concerns about OP, or trickle out as much information as he can about upcoming releases, Matt solidly feels “in our corner,” and that’s nice.

Also, he’s just a cool dude! I have had the pleasure of bumping into Matt a few times at PAX South. Most memorably, in 2017 shortly after the game’s release, Matt was hosting Destiny Staff Challenges for the remaining oversized, double sided, plastic Kylo/Rey cards. In order to take one home, you just had to beat Matt. Which I couldn’t pull off Friday. Or Saturday. I thought I was going home without one but gave it one more shot on Sunday with a very tired Matt who agreed to let me try again as his last challenge of the weekend. I managed to eke out a win, and I still have that card which I can’t bring myself to part with.

So a huge shoutout to Matt Holland! We appreciate you! And we certainly hope you can find your way out of that tree…
