Fantasy Star Wars: Destiny FLGS Edition

So are you sad that you can’t seem to win? I know I can be, alas what shall we do? Well here is an idea that will help you to have fun even if you are having difficulties with gameplay. Fantasy Star Wars: Destiny. Ok before you stop reading hear me out.

The First Pick of the Draft Is…

Imagine all the fun of Star Wars: Destiny and Fantasy Football combined. The idea of a draft and trying to put together a better team of cards than your rivals. Put 4 packs a piece on the line and play for more than bragging rights. Let’s say you have the first overall pick in the draft. Do you take Darth Vader (AG1) or do you go after Vader’s Fist (AG13)? What mitigation cards do you take to round out your team?

Putting it All Together

So how do we get this idea started? You need to first find some people that would be interested. Then you will need to keep track of deck lists at your game store. The scoring can be changed depending upon the amount of players you have and the amount of cards you decide to draft. In my opinion, and what I hope to set up, I would want 5-8 people in the league. That way there is a nice diversity of ideas and a great way to set up the draft. The card amounts with that range would be somewhere around an 8 card team.

Each team would need to be set up with at least 1 character, 1 upgrade/downgrade, 1 support, 1 battlefield, and 2 events. In this scenario, that would leave 2 open spot for the rest of your team. You can use those spots on any of the categories. This will give everyone a well rounded team and also stops someone from taking all supports and nothing else. This style also makes it incumbent on the players to do research on what the “hot” decks are so that they can draft better.

I Know How to Score

Now that we have the basic idea of how to put the game together, how and when do we keep score? This is a good question. You see I think that it would be better to make this a high scoring match. Offense is where the excitement is at. What we need to look at first, is how long should we keep score. I think you could do this type of special event once every 3-4 months. This way we could schedule “seasons” around the new sets that come out.

The scoring is a different matter and anyone can come up with their own individual league rules for this. I will give you the ideas I plan on implementing when I start my league. I believe, if you are good enough to pick the right characters, you should get 5 points per win. This allows the characters, which are the heart of this game, worth the most points. Supports and Upgrades/Downgrades are cut from the same type of cloth. Trying to make them different points could become a bit cumbersome. Due to this reasoning I am going to go with 3 points per deck win. This isn’t 3 points per copy in a single deck; if more than 1 copy shows up in a deck, that will only get you 3 points.

Events can be a huge part of the game. If you can find that 1 big piece of removal, like Hidden Motive (RV5), then that could net you big points. There aren’t a lot of Blue decks that play without this card in them. Mitigation is the wildcard and because of that I would slot at 2 points per win. This puts the point threshold right on track with the other cards as well. This leads us to the last grouping, Battlefields. Battlefields are the kicker of this format. Because of this, I believe that if you get a correct Battlefield then you get 1 point per win.

Note

Here is a bit of a note for the format, you are not drafting these cards to play them. This draft is for the Meta in your FLGS. Let’s say I took Darth Vader-anyone can play this card; but for each win they get I would get 5 points. You, of course, can play the cards that you draft-I just wanted to make it clear that this isn’t a “play what you draft” idea.

The Champion

At the end of the season, or every week if you’d like, you tabulate the points each person has scored. Then you post the points and let the league see how they are doing. This way we can keep the excitement even when we can’t seem to roll well. The one thing we should all be able to do is to enjoy the culmination of season. Through doing this type of idea, you not only keep everyone’s interest up; but you also have a great time finding out how your friends rate the cards of this glorious game. What will be the first card selected overall? When will someone draft the first event card? I can’t believe that Cecil took a battlefield in the 4th round. These are all ways that will add to the excitement and enjoyment of the game we play. Many people may roll their eyes at this idea; but mark my words—some of you will try this. If you are one of the visionaries that give this a shot, or if you have any ways that will make it more fun or interesting, please let me know.

    1. I agree, the idea of being able to play any cards but have your “team” allows for fun on different levels.
