Guest Post: Tournament Report – Grievous/Nightsister/Tusken Raider

Allow us to present a tournament report from guest writer Laura Keith:

I play a lot of Game of Thrones tournaments, but this was my first Star Wars: Destiny event. We had a great group of players and it was a really fun day. I had only played this deck twice before the tournament and lost both times to eHan/eRey, so I assumed I wouldn’t do well, but I still wanted to playtest a bit. I think it turned out alright! There are a few details I do remember, since I wasn’t planning on doing a write-up, I wasn’t paying super-close attention.

I haven’t had access to a ton of packs, maybe 30 total, so I needed to stick to single die characters, and these had great impact. Tri-color gives me access to a lot of great control cards, and I like a slightly defensive strategy with the ability to do significant damage early

Game 1 vs. eJango & 2x Stormtrooper (?)

I don’t remember exactly what Justin was playing here, but it was definitely Red/Yellow and definitely eJango. I have a Jango deck as well, so I know first-hand how brutal it can be. The action economy is outstanding. I lucked out big time on this game. My opponent couldn’t roll damage to save his life, so I got off to an early start and kept the pressure on. Damage he was able to roll was easily controlled quickly through events, and when I defeated his characters I still had at least two and maybe all three of mine in play with little damage.

Game 2 vs. Definitely Grievous, maybe Bala-Tik, maybe Jango?

Eli is a fun guy to play against, and he’s also a really strong player. I didn’t have high hopes going into this game, but the ability to manipulate and remove dice with this deck is pretty strong. I was only able to steal a Comlink with Grievous and he took it back when my Stormtrooper went down the next turn. If I’m remembering correctly “He Doesn’t Like You” was the MVP this game, but it was close and went to time.  He conceded after a good roll on my part and not enough time to finish up. He might have made it through with another round.

Game 3 vs. eLuke & Rey

Rob had a good start, and seeing Luke get some strong damage early on made me pretty nervous. I focused my energy on Luke, even discarding “Backup Muscle” and a “DH-17 Blaster Pistol” to re-roll. With so few supports and upgrades, that could have really come back to bite me. But it turned out alright. Rob would only play upgrades on Rey since he knew I would take them, and without Luke, the lack of damage prevented him from hitting me too hard. He took out my Nightsister after I defeated Luke, but the Tusken Raider with the Gaffi Stick was enough.  Two Backup Muscles and a well-timed Block helped out a lot.

Game 4 vs. eJango & 2x Stormtrooper

At this point I’m the only 3-0 and it’s mine to lose. After Ian’s first roll, I thought I was doomed, 5 damage on Grievous before I could do anything about it thanks to Jango’s action economy. I held off on upgrades and saved my resources, which was lucky. I rolled two 3-damage sides and had the ability to pay for them, putting 6 on Jango first turn. It was a very quick back-and-forth, and by round 3 we were both down to one character.

I missed one of my Backup Muscle triggers, which could have been problematic. My last standing character only needed two damage to be defeated, but his remaining Stormtrooper only needed one. He rolled in and managed 1 damage. I threw in my missed “Backup Muscle” from the last round and, after I rolled in, had nothing good on my On the Hunt, so I replaced it with Hunker Down and took a shield. A few bad rolls on his side and a good roll on mine and it was game over, 2 damage to spare.

Starting with 3 dice versus many deck’s 4 can be a disadvantage, so I built the deck to have strong health and more control than a typical Villain aggro deck. With Grievous’ ability, I can put fewer upgrades in my deck and focus more on defense and dice control. I would probably replace Occupation with Take Cover or Aim. That was the only card I was pretty comfortable with discarding for re-rolls all day.
