12 Days of Destiny – Day 9

We are deep in the holiday season, and I have to admit that I get a bit…enthusiastic…about Christmas. To that end, I thought it might be fun to take a shot at a “12 Days of Destiny” series of articles that highlight twelve wonderful (or at least impactful) things that Destiny has brought to us. The Ninth Day of Destiny we’re visited by one of the most vengeful ghosts of Destiny past.

On the Ninth Day of Destiny, FFG Gave to Me…Nines’ Weapons Swinging

Having already gotten a nod on a previous day, I’ll try to keep this one about FN-2199 relatively short. You can’t say “Nines” in a Destiny crowd without dredging up some terrible memories for a few people. If you missed the Nines meta, then suffice to say that it was no fun watching your opponent overwrite multiple weapons for free, rolling out each of their dice and resolving them immediately as they did, and then finally rolling Nines in with whichever best weapon you had decided to keep on him. It could be brutal and being able to easily fit him into a two-wide deck with a heavy hitter or even squeeze him into a three-wide deck with a fiendish supporting cast made it worse. The fixes for FN-2199 ended up not only including a change to his printed point cost but also a fundamental change to the rules. That’s right – they printed a card so powerful that they felt one of the only ways to fix him was to change the rules of the game and limit each player to only overwriting an upgrade once per round. Anyway, FN-2199 seems a distant history now, but our collective memory of him may best be summed up by this adaptation of Scrooge in A Christmas Carol confronting his own spirit of Christmas past.

“FFG!” said the Destiny Community in a broken voice, “remove us from this place.”

“I told you these were shadows of the things that have been,” said the Ghost. “That they are what they are, do not blame me!”

“Remove us!” they exclaimed. “We cannot bear it!”

They turned upon the Trooper, and seeing that it looked upon them with a weapon, in which in some strange way there were fragments of all the weapons it had wielded before, wrestled with it.

“Leave us! Take us back. Haunt us no longer!”
