Lessons From a Noob

I’ve been thinking back on those days of yore when I was a noob. Well, I still am. I don’t often get a chance to play as I have many demands on my time. But when I can play, several lessons that I’ve learned spring to mind.

Lesson 1 – Know how your cards work. This is something I still have trouble with. When I played Vader (AG1) last Friday, I forgot his power action. Another time I lost while playing him because I thought Fear and Dead Men (AG7) was using both his character dice instead of just one.

Lesson 2 – Don’t touch other players stuff. When I was new, one of my cards said to reroll an opponents die. I reached across the table, and he almost came across to smack me. A bit of an overstatement maybe, but just tap the die or tell them which one. No need to get into a WWE situation just because of a misunderstanding.

Lesson 3 – Use all the same sleeves. I had bought a jumble of different sleeves when I first started. Now keep in mind that this was my first trading card game, so I had no clue as to the basics. I now understand the need for uniformity with this so you can’t use them to cheat.

Lesson 4 – Accessories are great. Besides sleeves, here are some useful items to pick up now that you’re heading down the rabbit hole with the rest of us. A dice tray. They’re helpful to keep your dice from going onto the floor or knocking into your opponents play area. A play mat. They’re great for keeping your dice from getting scratched up. Neither are very expensive. There are a variety of storage options and a variety of prices. For myself, I use the FFG dice binders for dice storage, and plastic baseball card holders from the Container Store for storing my cards.

That’s all I have for now. I hope some of it helps those of you new to the game.

Until next time…
