Card Analysis: A Tale of Tragedy (CV006)

In the game of control and manipulation, this event can make a solid play for a Sith-based team.

Introduction

A Tale of Tragedy is a blue villain event. It costs 1 resource to play and requires you to spot a Sith. As long as you have a Sith alive on your side of the table, you can choose another character, yours or your opponents, and manipulate their character dice to any side you choose. If the character is elite and has both dice in the pool, you can manipulate both.

Design Notes

Up until now, spotting was always about color, but recently we have added card type, faction, and now subtype. The design of this card is purely a thematic play, but also prevents major abuse. Unless you have two Sith on your side of the table, this card will not be able to affect your own Sith dice (not like Vader needs any additional help…)

There are very similar elements to this card as there are to “Use the Force,” a card that was originally in Awakenings and has since been reprinted in Convergence. Though they are the same cost, this card has a bit tighter restriction and allows for a slightly larger payout, in the potential to change two dice if the character being targeted is elite.

Artwork/Lore

The thematics of this card are not lost to any fan of the prequel films. This represents a scene in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith where Palpatine and Anakin share a moment while attending the opera Squid Lake, performed by a Mon Calamari performance troupe. It is during this moment that Palpatine tells the story of Darth Plagueis the Wise, manipulating Anakin further to his side.

Things to Consider

If you are playing any of the Sith Characters, this may be an interesting card to include a single copy of, as it has the power to manipulate both Character dice of an elite character. Competitively, it is unlikely that you will find an effective pairing with two Sith characters. All that is to say, unless your Sith is a supporting character, this card will rarely be used on your own dice, and almost always will be thought of as a mitigation card, not a card that fixes your own dice.

Long term, however, future Sith characters may enable this card to be an effective dice-fixer, and one resource is a small price to pay to get two Character dice on their optimal sides.
