State of the Mill

Isn’t it a great time to be a mill player? The latest article by Fantasy Flight Games is music to my ears. Those who know me and have seen my articles know how this is near and dear to my heart. Now that FFG is publicly talking about the mill archetype, it is cause for celebration!

In the beginning, the mill archetype was fun but not very competitive, with no true deck manipulation until the last couple of sets. The cards from Legacies, Rivals, and Way of the Force are pushing the envelope of what mill players can do and want to do. Mill is being thrust back into the spotlight. Previously players around the world have won numerous tournaments using a variation of mill characters. Now with more at their disposal it appears the time for mill is now.

Playtesting the New Mill

I was fortunate to play some Star Wars: Destiny on Friday night piloting Plo Koon (WF57)/Jedha Partisan (LG48)/Jedha Partisan, and I faced many aggressive decks from eDooku (WF1)/eTalzin (LG3) and eSeventh Sister (EW10)/eFifth Brother (WF2). I also played against a vehicle deck featuring Planetary Bombardment (WF33). With the new toys being spoiled for aggro decks, mill will be tested once again.

Due to work and life obligations, I haven’t played as much as I’d like, but playing got the fire burning again. I knew once I was done playing that damage outputs from these new decks in our future meta will hit harder. On my way home from play-testing that evening, I was theory-crafting about different combinations I could try and what combinations of characters to use.  The mill focus of some of the new characters released like Cassian Andor (WF50) and the new Anakin Skywalker (WF88) inspires me to find more ways to stymie my opponents.

What Does the Future Hold?

We live in exciting times ahead with the latest set featuring more mill mechanics. What combinations of characters are you excited about? What cards do you think will be dusted off and used now? Will mill decks feature more supports? With so many questions and combinations ahead, isn’t it a great time to be a mill player?
