Product Review: Destiny Tokens (Armada Games)

The Armada Games Destiny Token Sets are one of many entries into the third party acrylic token market. With offerings including a variety of sizes, styles, and materials, how do these tokens by Armada Games stack up? Let’s find out!

Appearance (4.75/5.0)

There may be a few flashier options for tokens on the market, but if you’re looking for a minimalist design with a sharp appearance that closely approximates the standard tokens found in the starter sets, then look no further than these sets. The token colors are bright and the etching on them is crisp and clear. I specifically like the design of the shield tokens; Armada Games absolutely nailed these; I find them much preferable to the other options on the market that abandoned the Mandalorian helmet design. Finally, these tokens come with a paper backing on them that helps protect them during the manufacture process (which is standard for acrylic tokens). Make sure to remove this prior to use so that your tokens look every bit as good as they should.

Utility (5.0/5.0)

My chief concern for the utility of a token set is always the ability of myself and my opponents to easily identify and distinguish between them on the table. To this end, neither my opponents nor I have had any issues recognizing or distinguishing between tokens. The tokens are larger than most which, when paired with their bright colors, makes them high visible on the table. Speaking of their size, these tokens are roughly the same height and width as the Star Wars: Destiny dice. (And they have the same depth as a die when a complete set of each type is stacked.) This might not sound like an important feature, but it’s actually quite a brilliant design choice; it means that your tokens will fit neatly into any spaces designed to hold your dice. In my case, I’m currently storing these in the Deluxe Deck Box (also by Armada Games) that I recently reviewed, and it’s a perfect solution for storing and organizing my dice and tokens. Don’t overlook this feature of these tokens; I haven’t seen any others that fit as neatly into dice storage areas.

Additionally, the tokens are similar enough to the core set tokens that they are easily identifiable. Unlike other tokens that use novel designs that may be less recognizable, and/or less clear markings for 1/3/5 denominations, you’ll find no such issues with this set. So far, I haven’t had any issues with running out of tokens in any of my games. I seriously doubt that any decks would require more damage tokens than come in this set; however, I could imagine some decks needing more Resource and/or Shield tokens, so it may be wise to invest in multiple sets if you’re concerned about the possibility that you’ll need more than five of either.

Durability (5.0 /5.0)

One of the most appealing aspects of acrylic token sets is their durability, and that’s certainly no exception here. Unlike tokens that have designs printed on them or sets made out of other materials, it is very unlikely that these tokens will show any chipping, peeling, or other signs of wear. Made of thick acrylic with their designs etched into them, I see no reason to expect that these tokens won’t last for many years to come.

Cost (5.0/5.0)

Relative to other token sets, these come in at a very reasonable cost. The Damage ($8.99 USD), Resource ($2.99 USD), and Shield ($2.99 USD) Token Sets would total just under $15 USD if you purchased them all. That’s an incredible deal in my opinion, and much more affordable than other token sets on the market – including many others that aren’t as well-designed as these. It’s also very important to me that the sets can be purchased individually. This allows you to mix and match with other sets (without having to purchase the entire set), purchase additional sets of tokens that you think you’ll run low on (without having to purchase an entire duplicate set of every token type), and easily replace tokens should any get lost or damaged.

Overall Rating: 5.0/5.0

Final Thoughts

Though they sport a relatively simple design, the Destiny Token Sets by Armada Games are some of the better designed, more useful tokens that I’ve seen on the market, and their price can hardly be beat. If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to upgrade both the durability and aesthetics of your token sets, then I recommend heading over to the Armada Games store and checking them out!
