LEAGUE REPORT: Level 1 Game Shop – Week 1

I hope you finished reading my last article, Deck Analysis 101: eJango/eKylo, which goes over the deck I played this week. In this post, I will be reviewing the games that I had to see how good the deck was. Spoiler: It was a rough night.

Let’s go over the league rules first: The league I’m in is at Level One Game Shop in downtown Kansas City. It’s a great little shop that’s in a huge farmer’s market.  It’s also the only store open past 4 pm, so we have plenty of space to play. We had about ten to twelve players show up over the course of about four hours or so. The entry fee was five dollars to cover the cost of the OP kit being used, with other prizes being determined at the end of the league (which is six weeks long). I’ll put the link to the standings at the end of the article. Overall, the night was good, and the next five weeks are going to be exciting.

Game 1 vs Mill (Practice): This game as it says here, was just a quick practice game, since this was my first with eJango/eKylo. I thought I’d do pretty well against mill, since it doesn’t kill my characters. Jango and Kylo are pretty good characters, especially after a few upgrades. Turns out I was wrong. My opponent, who is also one of the store owners, got, as he said, the perfect storm, and milled me while also preventing me from killing anything. It didn’t help that my first two turns, I only saw two upgrades, Gaffi Stick (AW 25) and Holdout Blaster (AW 63). The game was very one sided. Luckily it was only practice. Loss.

Game 2 vs eBala/Jango/Trooper: My first league match, and against what some people are calling the new best deck. This was much more of a game, and probably my favorite game of the night. We went back and forth a lot with damage. He didn’t focus down one of my characters, while I focused on Bala, then Jango, then the Trooper. He ended up killing Kylo first, which was a good choice, since he had Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber (AW15) and Force Choke (AW13) by that time. It came down to three health on my Jango vs one on his trooper. He was just an action or two faster than I was getting the damage, and Jango went down… things got very tense in the end. Loss.

Game 3 vs eLuke/Ackbar: 0-1 isn’t going to bring me down! This game was against a newer player, who was borrowing a mill deck at the tournament Level One had the week before. He was a cool guy and we have fun playing. This game went perfectly for me, with good dice control as well as getting to kill Luke pretty early. Ackbar has a hard time fighting off Kylo even though Jango went down. I felt a bit better after seeing the deck work properly. Win.

Game 3 vs eGrevious/Dooku: I’m feeling good after a win, and jump into this game right after. I’ve played Grevious and Dooku before, so I know to kill Grevious first and then just weather the tankiness of Dooku. Well, things got off to a bad start with Jango getting eight damage in the first two rounds. I stole some tempo back by dunking on Grevious and getting him down to 1 after another round or so. Jango and Grevious went down one after the other, though Jango died first. Some poor rolls and Dooku’s ability draw the game out for a while after, but in the end I fall just short, Kylo dies, while Dooku has three health left, and I have Intimidate (AW 84) in hand. Loss.

Game 4 vs Hyperloop: When I saw that this guy was playing Hyperloop, I was a bit excited, I thought I could handle it, and after playing a five person free-for-all game featuring the combo a few weeks prior, I thought it couldn’t be too bad in a normal one on one game… I was wrong. Luckily, the combo took a bit to get online, as I hit the Millennium Falcon (AW49) TWICE with Kylo’s special. That was a good time. He eventually got the loop going, as well as chaining Second Chance (AW137) on his Hired Guns (AW47). Kylo ended up taking on both Hired Guns (AW47) solo, just tearing through health and shield like crazy.

The loop kept me from doing anything too good, like the turn where I rolled FIVE special sides on all of Kylo’s dice, which would have ended the game. Now, the end of this game is very upsetting for me, it ended about two actions too early for me to win. This time was my fault though. I rolled out Kylo, He rolled out the Millennium Falcon (AW 49), I ignored it like the rest of the game and resolved a die or two. He then killed Kylo with the four ranged side he rolled. I looked at my hand and saw that I had Unpredictable (AW162) AND Scramble (AW161). I misplayed badly and it cost me. This joins a couple games of Magic in my “you’re better than this” file. Loss.

Game 5 vs eKylo/eDooku: I was happy to get away from hyperloop, but still tilted from beating myself in the end. I was up against another regular to the shop, who was also using elite Kylo. This game started off close, with me losing Jango, then him losing Kylo right after. After that, I couldn’t roll damage to save my life. His dice control didn’t help either. The tipping point was rolling four blanks on four dice. This game was alright, but I was done after this game ended. Luckily, so was everyone else, as most people had packed up, or left by now. Loss.

1-4 isn’t exactly what I was expecting, though I wasn’t expecting to go undefeated either. Even though I lost four games, most of them were very very close. More practice and a few trades should help even out my draws. More play testing will help me feel the groove of the deck as well. I have a few other ideas I want to try with Kylo, but I think eJango is a great pick right now. Not just for card selection, but because people are afraid of Jango. Having two powerful elite characters is a HUGE boon right now. People see Jango, remember how much damage he can pump out, and gun for him.

On the other side of my board, Kylo just waits and builds up upgrades. Once Jango is dead, Kylo can just mop up the rest, once he has three upgrades, he is CRAZY strong. Tons of specials, or just tons of melee damage. On the other hand, Jango is probably even better if left unchecked, so it’s a hard choice to make. This is making me hesitate when thinking of changing decks. My other ideas don’t involve another elite partner for Kylo, which would make him the main target. I believe he excels in the mid to late game, and having him die in the first three rounds, doesn’t do too much for you.

There are a few cards I want to trade for and try out, but I think this deck has potential. Spirit of Rebellion might also bring some good mid-range options as well. I just hope week two of this league is a little better for me. Also, as promised here are the current standings: http://levelonegameshop.com/destinyleague/ See you next week!
