Star Wars: Destiny Initial Impressions

With my Dice Masters experience, you might be wondering why I’m writing a blog about Star Wars: Destiny, however it was my love of Dice Masters that brought me here and I can see this is the case for many other players who are familiar faces. For my first post, I will be focusing on what I love about Star Wars: Destiny, and what brought me over to the dark side.

Everything about Star Wars: Destiny brought me in; from the game play to the beautiful artwork, and well, common people, it’s Star Wars!!!!

When I first sat down, my initial reaction was how easy this game was to pick up, a short check list is provided with what actions you can do as well as a list of what each die face means. Coming from a board gaming background and playing DM competitively, having an entire game be understood on a double sided card is amazing. Even for more complex interactions, or deck building instructions, the double side instruction page provided is clear and concise and left me with little to no questions about how to play. This is so vital when trying to teach new players or learn a game, if there are too many nuances or too complicated to learn, you will lose people before they even give the game a chance.

Another thing that struck me about Star Wars: Destiny was how it truly felt like a battle, each player gets one action, and then the other gets one action (unless you play something that will generate another action) it’s fast paced and the volleying back and forth was exciting for me. I never knew what my opponent was going to do, which embodies a battle style to me. The games do currently take a significant amount of time to play 30-45 odd minutes, so in a tournament setting, this could mean for very long days. Some may see this as a good thing, others a bad, however, with spending this kind of money on a game, I want to feel like I’ve actually gotten the chance to play the game.

As for game balance and usefulness of cards, at this point, from what we’ve seen and been able to play, there are some combos that are stronger than others, and cards that are clearly more powerful, but there are still no useless cards in your deck and most cards you obtain in packs will be useful in some type of deck. The games built in discard and re roll mechanic is wonderful. You don’t have to sit around with stacks of cards you can do nothing with, simply discard a card and you can reroll as many dice as you want, or discard them at the end of your turn and draw back up. They also have first turn advantage mitigation, when going second, if you choose to, you will get two shields to place on your characters as you wish.

One of the most appealing things to me about Star Wars: Destiny was that it is Star Wars, but also it’s a Fantasy Flight Games Star Wars game. The quality of FFGs is beyond amazing for all their games and components, (I own at least 7 FFG games). As for Star Wars: Destiny specifically, the quality of the art, the dice, the card stock and even down to the packaging is above par. As for their customer support, I’ve not had to use it for much of anything, but that’s also probably a good thing. Having to constantly ask for clarifications about a game means that they didn’t spend enough time proofing and play testing, which FFG does neither, they aren’t shy about quickly changing rules, fixing broken cards/mechanics and addressing their customers concerns.

Star Wars and FFG is what brought me to Star Wars: Destiny, and I couldn’t be any happier. All I can say is that whether you choose to play Star Wars: Destiny or not, is that you realize that this is a game, and like any other, it’s meant to bring joy and fun to your life. If you find yourself playing something that doesn’t do that for you, then you need to find something that does.

I hope to see you guys at the table,

-Jenna
