Card Dissection: Force Protection (AW39)

Welcome to another card dissection.  For this article, let us take a deep dive into Force Protection, a blue ability upgrade for the Heroes.  While this card does not cause any damage, it can be a strong add if played correctly.

Let’s break down this card by looking at various categories:

The Art: While some cards in the game have iconic characters and scenes, this particular card features an original piece of art, a Twi’lek Jedi Knight, deflecting blaster fire with her lightsaber.  The card’s colors contrast with the blue background, allowing the artwork to standout.  The colors themselves are vibrant, and are different than many cards in the game.

Die: The die itself is quite interesting.  It is very thematic.  The card is called Force Protection, and that is exactly what this card does, protect.  It has 1 Disrupt, 1 Discard, 1 Resource, Special, Special, and a blank.  You have a one in three chance of rolling a special, a one in three chance of rolling something to reduce your opponents assets, and the of course the ability to gain a resource.  While I personally tend to avoid cards that do not provide damage, it is this card’s special that makes it a strong contender.

Ability: The special text of this card allows you to gain three shields and you can distribute them as you wish.  This is a very strong ability.  Typically, the affect of a die’s side has to be directed to one character, so to have the ability to gain three shields and place them wherever is incredibly strong.  While the card can only be played on a blue character, its effect allows you to benefit any character on your team.

Cost: Three resources may feel a bit high for this card, but as we say often, there is a reason for the high cost.  In this case, it is that special.  With a one in three chance of rolling it, this is worth the one time cost of three resources.

Deck Options: A lot of this card’s value comes from how you plan on using it.  If your deck has a high chance of rolling focus, or the ability to trigger a card’s special ability, this should be an easy sell.  Also, think about Qui-gon Jinn (AW37), who has the ability to do damage to an opponent by removing his shields just before he gains more shields.  To be honest, any blue hero deck should consider this card, especially if you are able to deal damage through your other character or with other upgrades.

Final Thoughts:  Force Protection (AW39) is a highly thematic card that helps you prevent future damage to your characters.  Heroes running blue or some combination within should take a hard look at this card.  Being aware of your deck’s dice capabilities will be critical when deciding weather to include this card or not, and perhaps it’s value is higher in a mono-blue deck than in a two color deck, given its restriction for blue characters only.
