Gen Con in Indianapolis is undoubtedly one of the biggest tabletop gaming conventions in the world, and while Fantasy Flight Games has been present at the convention for the past 20 years, they’re stepping it up in 2018. Fantasy Flight has just announced a co-sponsorship for this year’s Gen Con, which means more than just their logo on Gen Con’s marketing materials.
As part of their sponsorship package, FFG will have a large space within one of the convention halls, giving them lots of space to not only sell their products, but also give people opportunities to try out their games. This could help get Star Wars: Destiny into the hands of more people, starting a new wave of interest in the game. We have seen in our own experience what a table and a two-player starter set can do to get people interested in the game. It could also allow FFG to have more tournaments, how-to-play or play-to-win events during Gen Con; a way to get more CCG players involved in what has been a predominantly board game centric event/crowd.
In addition to space, FFG will also receive pre-show promotion, on-site graphics, and additional marketing opportunities within the Gen Con literature. In the past and at other conventions, this has included their logo/products on convention name tags, coupons and/or giveaways. This would mean more of our favorite games, more chance to interact directly with the parties responsible for them, and possibly get, dare I say, spoilers? While we don’t know all the details of what FFG plans to do with their time and space at Gen Con, it looks like this co-sponsorship is a big step for our favored game company.
