5 Tips for New Star Wars: Destiny players

So you wanna play Star Wars: Destiny. I know at first glance the game looks both exciting and intimidating. Both are true, the game is very exciting and fun. Especially being in its infancy, you can grow with the meta. Yet, the game can be intimidating at the same time. Lack of product and a strong following can make it tough to break into the game and be competitive. But with these tips, hopefully you can jump in head first and start enjoying this wonderful game Fantasy Flight Games has provided us in no time.

Get the starter packs

Getting the starter packs is a great way for you to get a feel for the game, and to see if it’s something you want to invest in and continue playing. Buying both starters is also a great way to start your collection. Within the starter packs are cards and characters you cannot pull from a boosters, like Finn (AW45), and everybody’s favorite, Mind Probe (AW60). Both of these cards are awesome in the meta right now.

Get to know all the cards

Not only will learning the cards help you familiarize yourself with the game, but speed up game play as well. This will also help with deck-building, because you will know your options and will help you think about substitutions you can make to improve your deck. This tip also applies to the rules. Familiarizing yourself with all the rules will save time during game play, resulting in more games played.

It’s not all about the legendary cards

Sure, the legendary cards are strong, some being the strongest in the game, but that doesn’t mean they are the only options to be competitive. I currently play a deck that has no legendary cards and is very strong in my local meta. As far as control and dice manipulation goes, the common 0-cost cards are almost always your better option. I will pitch a high cost legendary card for a re-roll over Dodge (AW155) or Electroshock (AW159) almost every time.

Go play at your local game store

Isn’t this the reason we all do this? The community that surrounds gaming is so awesome, I’ve made some of my best friends through gaming. There is also no better way to get better than going to your FLGS (friendly local game store) and playing during opening play nights, and even registering for a tournament or two. Open play nights are also great for trading and learning more about the game and strategy.

Now take these five steps, get your hands on a deck, and start dominating your corner of the Galaxy!

  1. Another thing that you can do, especially if you have Steam, is purchase Tabletop Simulator ($20 but goes on sale for $10 regularly) and install the FREE Star Wars: Destiny module. This is a good thing as, currently, packs are very hard to come by, and there is a HUGE support base and fan base that uses the mod.
