Product Review: Pirate Lab Carrying Case – You Can Trust These Pirates

You’ve invested a great deal of time, energy, and money into building your Star Wars: Destiny decks. Now you need to transport them to the next tournament. With so many options out there to choose from, what do you use? Today, we’ll give you the specs on one option that we really like! I use it to transport all of my Destiny decks to and from events. With the durability, functionality, and style you want, Pirate Lab offers the card game cases you’ll love! I’ll focus on the Small Card Case that is offered, but there is a Large Card Case, Messenger Bag, and Backpack available for those of you who want to transport a larger number of cards.

Appearance (4.50/5.00)

Full front view of case

The Small Card Case comes in 14 different options ranging from solid colors and a few images. You shouldn’t have an issue finding a color that matches your style. My only wish would be for custom image options, and then I could have a case solution that matches the theme of my playing mat and card sleeves. It has a boxy design, but that is due to the strength of the sides of the case. This won’t form to your body like your typical messenger bag so it is going to stick out from your body when you carry it. This is part of the reason I chose the Small card case over the Large one.

Utility (4.50/5.00)

Interior View

I can carry four decks, a mini pocket binder with my “trade fodder”, and my play mat all inside the case, although I have to fold the mat if I choose this option. There is also an option to carry my play mat on the bottom of the case with the adjustable straps. I only realized this was an option by reading other reviews. Pirate Lab is missing a huge opportunity by not mentioning this feature in any of their descriptions.

You can choose from two different foam inserts for inside of the case.

  • The “Compartment Tray” is great for flexibility with a low-medium card capacity. It features two long interior compartments with additional foam dividers and can hold up to 700 single sleeved cards. I carry each of my decks in deck boxes, but I

can still fit six 80-card boxes or four 120-card boxes. If you’re taking more than four decks to a tournament you may want to consider the Large Case. There is also a smaller interior compartment where you can store additional items. I store my tokens and the dice bag I use.

  • The “2-Row Max Capacity Tray” provides you with two long interior compartments that can hold 900 single-sleeved cards. If you’re using deck boxes you’ll be able to store eight 80-card boxes or six 120-card boxes.
Metal shoulder strap clasps

For maximum space you can remove the foam inserts completely. The sides are sturdy enough to still protect your precious cargo inside.

You’ll also benefit from self-healing zippers and one of the best shoulder straps I’ve ever encountered. The clasps are made of heavy metal and rotate 360 degrees so it moves with you. The pad at the top is comfortable and made of a material that prevents it from sliding around on your shoulder.

Durability (4.50/5.00)

Durable, water-resistant fabric

I am confident that this bag will last me quite a long time, even with normal wear and tear from being hauled to and from my FLGS and local events. Other users have reported some fraying of the stitches after extended use, but there have not been any tears or issues with the seams coming apart. I can deal with frayed stitches, but I did lower the rating to a 4.5 for this. You’ll have a sturdy, rubber handle if you prefer to carry your bag instead of using the shoulder strap. The self-healing nylon zippers will also provide longevity. You can count on the heavy-duty polyester and water-resistant fabric to keep your cards well protected.

Price Point (3.50/5.00)

This is a quality bag and it comes with a slightly higher price tag to cover it. The Small Case will run you $49.99 with your choice of foam insert or $39.99 without. I recommend spending the extra $10 for the insert so that your decks fit snugly into the case. Unless you have enough to fill the whole thing, they could slide around a lot. This will still give you space for up to eight decks depending on the type of deck box you may use, or even more if you choose to carry them outside of a deck box. I could buy a cheaper bag, a competitor offers a slightly smaller bag for $35, but it won’t offer me the same amount of protection and I don’t see it lasting as long. I was comfortable spending the $50 now and not have to buy another case for quite a long time.

Overall Rating 4.25/5.00

Final Thoughts

Even with a higher price point than other options in the market, Pirate Lab offers you a quality product that allows you to protect your cards and carry all the necessary tools you’ll need to an event. This bag was designed with gamers in mind, and Pirate Lab is just getting started.
