Padme and Jyn: BFFs

With some spoilers announced for the upcoming set of Star Wars: Destiny Spirit of Rebellion, many of us are already brewing new decks, or amending old ones. Currently finding any deck that will work successfully utilizing only one colour is hard. With more and more sets being released, the opportunity to build mono decks are far more likely to be successful in a competitive setting.

I’ve always found myself on the control end of the spectrum when it comes to playing CCGs; Star Wars: Destiny is no different; however, the current meta has a lot of aggro teams doing very well against almost any deck. Naturally, control decks take a while to set up, and with the maximum of 3 shields per character against the 4-10 damage output by aggro teams each turn, it’s a hard one to pull off.

In Star Wars: Destiny, there are two ways of winning, you either kill your opponents characters, or you make them run out of cards in their deck as well as their hand. The latter of the two is commonly referred to as a Mill deck. Milling your opponent literally means depleting them of their deck of cards. The only way to succeed at this is by having a deck heavy in dice manipulation, shield generation, health regeneration and the obvious one, forced discards.

When I saw the spoiler for Jyn Erso (SR44), I immediately thought of how much of a great addition she would make to a mill deck, for me in particular, one with Padme (AW48). She has a discard face on 1/3 of her die, two ranged damage sides, a blank side and a side that generates a resource. When you pair this with Padme, it should in theory work great as you will need extra resources to make Padme’s special effective. “Discard the top card of an opponent’s deck or spend 1 resource to discard the top 2 cards of an opponent’s deck.” So not only are you forcing your opponent to discard cards in their hand 1/3 of the time, but you are depleting their deck as well with Padme.

For me, the best thing about Jyn in such a deck is her ability. “The cost of the first Yellow event you play each round is decreased by 1.” This is HUGE in a mill deck, especially one with Padme; Padme’s special, as mentioned above, costs resources and sometimes this leaves you without a whole lot extra. Either that, or you sacrifice only one discard on her special rather than two because you want to keep energy for an event. Between the energy generation, and the decreased cost of events, which are HEAVY in a mill deck, she makes a great addition!

You really only need one Jyn for her ability, and point wise, there’s no wrong way to build this, both have great dice in pairs, but I personally lean more towards the ePadme/Jyn for 29 pts rather than Padme/eJyn for 30. But I will certainly be trying both to see which works best.

Needless to say, Jyn has it all, and I’m definitely most excited about being able to make an all female deck.
