Destiny Origins: Who are the Nightsisters?

One of the most compelling things about Star Wars: Destiny for me is that it is absolutely steeped in theme. While I was drawn in as the mechanics were revealed, I reveled in the cards and powers, already visualizing Darth Vader’s indelible presence slowly crushing his opponents, General Grievous taking trophies from his victims, or a Jedi learning to become One with the Force and continue to provide aid after their death. Characters in Star Wars: Destiny are particularly notable, in that they sit out front and set the tone for what you bring to the table, but understanding how their powers and stat lines are informed by their characters in Star Wars media adds a flair to the game that you can’t get anywhere else. Yes, Darth Vader is an exceptionally power character in Star Wars: Destiny, but I fully believe that the main reason he’s so sought-after is because he’s freaking Darth Vader. To that end, let me introduce the Nightsister.

NightsistersGameplay-wise, the Nightsister (AW12) is a non-unique Force Villain character with a solid, all-around die. She can hit for damage, disrupt your economy, gain resources, and ruin your plans by forcing you to discard. Plus, her power allows you reroll a die by taking a damage. If that sounds like a fighting assassin-type who will put herself in danger to finish the mission, you’ve hit the nail on the head.

The Nightsisters are introduced in episodes of The Clone Wars animated series (currently in its entirety on Netflix). They are an ancient clan of Force sensitive women, and a stark reminder that the Jedi and the Sith are not the only beings in the galaxy to have tapped into the Force, nor to have developed their own beliefs and society around it. On their planet of Dathomir, the women are in charge and hold total power over the neighboring tribe of Zabraks. But none of that tells you why the Nightsister is themed so well.

The Nightsisters, like the Zabrak Nightbrothers, are highly skilled fighters (Darth Maul was pulled from this very same tribe). Dathomir produces a powerful green mist that the Nightsisters have learned to manipulate through magick; while their magicks allow them to do all sorts of interesting things, from producing healing and invisibility potions to physically altering people, one of its most important aspects is that it can strengthen—or outright imbue—a being’s connection to the Dark Side. Trained to fight to a very high level and utterly loyal to their sisters and clan, perhaps the most obvious sign of the potential power of a Nightsister lies in Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku’s one-time apprentice and assassin. Imagining Ventress on secret Jedi-hunting missions, or slipping undetected through a Republic base for some sabotage or other, truly brings out this fighter character that has a little of everything to offer. Alas, Ventress is not a character (yet—she does make a cameo on No Mercy (AW 86), a blue Villain event), so when you send your less famous and less skilled Nightsister on her missions in Destiny, she will get it done even though it be at the cost of her own well-being. Not all Nightsisters can be apprenticed to powerful Sith lords, but rest assured they can all contribute to a fight. So for those that may have never heard of the Nightsisters before, hopefully now you can imagine sending your very own Force assassin on missions to reroll dice, disrupt resources, and generally make a nuisance of herself. And all for a pittance of a point cost!

  1. Cool article, just a clarification, you state her power allows you remove a die by taking a damage. It actually just allows you to re-roll a die. Removing a die would be bonkers good.

I’m assuming you got your information from SWDestinyDB.com which is also currently wrong.
