Immersion in Destiny – III. The Eye of the Beholder

Welcome back to the third installment of the mini-series on the theme in Star Wars: Destiny. Following the discussions on how the dice and the card abilities bring the Star Wars theme to the game, I will finally look at the artwork itself.

I kept it for last, because I thought this would be the easy one. Boy was I wrong. As you all probably know, over the last two weeks, there has been a plethora of spoilers that needed to be looked at in order to decide which piece of art I personally think is most thematic. So, while browsing through all the art, I realized that all of it is rather thematic. While I do prefer some of the actual pictures over others, all of them show a little thematic story or depict an iconic character or item from the Star Wars universe.

Of course it is a bit harder to make neutral cards thematic for both sides. It is not an issue for weapons like [infopopup tag=aw059] or the Thermal Detonator (AW67), however, some artwork on neutral cards shows villains or heroes doing the action. Those cards are of course thematic by themselves but might look a bit out of place in a deck of the opposite affiliation.

So in the end, all the artwork is thematic and regarding the pictures you prefer the most is down to personal preference. So here are my favorites from the lot: I really do like the artwork on Launch Bay (AW31) and Patience (AW119). The artwork brings me right back to my teen years when I discovered the original Star Wars trilogy for the first time. I know I am rebel scum and I am proud of it. In fact, I never saw the evil endings of all those Star Wars RPG-computer games out there, as I simply never managed to refrain from being one of the good guys. I don’t know if with age there comes cynicism, but I think I will make an exception for Star Wars: Destiny, as I can totally see myself constructing some villain decks (but I am bound to stay a rebel at heart).

So there you have it. These are my favorites, which are yours?

Thank you for following this little series which I provisionally declare finished. In a couple of months, I want to see how the game shapes up and how thematic the battles will be. Although it is basically a “What if…” type of game, I am really looking forward to seeing eventually how Vader and a couple of Stormtroopers will fare against a team of Obi-Wan, Luke, Han and Leia. So, if I have some truly immersive and thematic battles that I want to share, Immersion in Destiny might be back.

Finally, one last extra for those of you who read this far: When I looked though the artwork, I realized that I wanted it all together, so I created a photo mosaic from all the spoiled cards (which had a decent image) to form an additional poster for our local launch event. Unfortunately, a few days ago, I was told that we will not have the event this weekend, because the kits have not arrived yet in the store. So probably my local event will coincide with the official launch in the beginning of December. Anyway, I thought, I share the poster with you, in case you want to use it on your game room wall or for your own events this weekend (I am so jealous).
