Card Dissection: Daring Escape (AW126)

As we continue to learn more and more about this set, many have expressed how powerful certain cards and combos are, and are a bit concerned about the balance of the game.  However, we haven’t seen them all, and there are likely plenty of cards that will help turn the balance of the game, such as this one, Daring Escape (AW 126).

This Neutral Hero card looks to be an early key defensive strategy for any hero deck. First off, this card has a resource cost of 2.  So, baring any sort of resource drain from your opponent, this card can be played with the resources you gain during the beginning of the game or during your upkeep phase.  You will not need to save resources to play this card, making this incredibly affordable.  Adding to this cards low resource cost, it has a low tempo cost as well.  In this, I mean the card does not require you to use a turn to play it.  The Ambush keyword (as spelled out on this card) allows you to take an additional action once the card is played, meaning that you can play this card, perform its effect, and then take an additional action, perhaps turning the overall turn in your favor.

Secondly, you can reroll as many of your opponents dice as you’d like.  Lets ignore the last part of the text and just focus on that for a minute.  You can cause some serious disruption to your opponents plans by rerolling all their key dice.  Is it possible the outcome could be less favorable to you and more favorable to your opponent?  Yes… but you would only roll the dice that you choose to roll.  Then you have an additional turn to react to the roll you just rolled.

THEN… you get to remove all dice showing blanks!  For a villains deck that may be running high powered cards, you may have dice with two blanks, making it a higher possibility that you can remove those dice from play. This would prevent them from being rerolled this turn!

When you think about the ultimate effect of this card, it really plays well into the cards theming.  This daring escape allows you, the hero, to cause some confusion to your opponent and give yourselves a jump on their next move.  An extremely well designed card when you consider the parallel in Star Wars storytelling.

While the card’s effect can be a bit uncertain, this card really helps you turn the pace of the game in your favor.

  1. I think that this card is a little to expensive to be played in the early game. In the early game you are going to want to play our your upgrades to get more dice, and faced with the decision to play this card, or to play a couple 1 cost upgrades, I feel like you are going to end up holding the card until late game, or ditching for a re-roll early game. The other issue I have with the card is that your are gambling 2 resources for the card to not backfire on you by helping the opponent with the luck of the roll. Granted you have another action to deal with it, but now you have wasted a card, 2 resources, and possible another card and or dice face to mitigate the bad luck. I think this card is best useful late game as a haymaker to attempt to shut down your opponent so you can go for the kill.
