Card Dissection: Ahsoka Tano (EW31)

My girl is here!!! Finally, Ahsoka comes to Star Wars: Destiny. This is a character card that once I saw, I knew I had do a card Dissection on. I know we don’t have the full set for Empire at War, but that doesn’t mean that we can not look at her as is. Join me as we take a look at the card my favorite character, Ashoka Tano (EW31).

The Art:

The artwork features our heroine crouched and ready, as if she is entering a battle. To me it captures a moment in Rebels season 2 where she enters a battle against the Fifth Brother and Seventh Sister. The background would also kind of lead me to believe this. Her lightsabers are drawn, her body is in motion, and her face shows a look of determination. This is an Ahsoka who knows and is confident in her skills. The artwork itself is kind of grainy from what I can tell, but the white and blues on Ahsoka herself just stick out in a beautiful bold fashion. This looks like a new piece of artwork not from any other FFG games and I have to say that it is fitting that we get artwork like this of her for Destiny.

Health:

Ahsoka comes in at a very healthy 11 points, this is a fantastic number to be at. 11 Points is at that perfect point between a character that dies too quickly and one whose health is fantastically meaty. Once you taken into account the rest of her card though, you will see that what you are getting for her health is actually really solid.

Point Cost:

Hero Blue doesn’t got a whole lot going for it in the “mid range” point cost area, however I think now Hero Blue has that. Ahsoka is 13 points for her single die version and 17 for her elite version. These are perfect numbers to allow her to have a wide variety of partners for deck building. Her 13 cost allows her to be put with another 17 or lower elite card that would be strong or allows her to be paired in a 3 character list. If you take this option you are more likely able to get off her ability, but with her die sides it is most likely better for you to run her elite version. Her elite version I think is where this card really shines. It allows you to be paired up with some pretty solid cards who are also elite. We will get to these in a later section.

Die:

The die sides of this card are really solid. There is nothing really special about them, however the fact that there are no pay sides makes up for that. Her die sides are 2 Melee Damage, 2 Melee Damage, 1 Discard, 1 Shield, 1 Resource, and a blank. No matter what you roll, you will be able to resolve it. 2 Damage sides with 2 Melee means that her damage out put is going to be consistent. Perfect for turning on a modified Melee Damage die of a partner or upgrade. 1 Discard side is always solid as it can lead to a moment where you can take away a power play your opponent would like like to make. 1 Shield is always good to have even in this Vibroknife (SR57) age. It should also be not be forgotten that having both Melee Damage and a Shield sides also turns on Synchronicity (SR106), a very strong card Blue Hero really likes. The 1 Resource is standard however triggering her effect and getting one Resource back isn’t terrible, but at least you have a way to roll a Resource if you wanted it. Making money is always something good to have.

Ability:

Now we get into an area of this card that has layers. Her ability is one of many that we are seeing in Empire at War where you are able to ready a character. However, unlike the other ones, this one is always “turned on” as long as you can pay for it. After the first time you activate her, you can see what you roll to see if you want to use her ability or not. This is a thing to consider in deciding to ready her or not. I think the best way to get around you opponent messing with your dice that you roll with her when you choice to ready her is by cheating the resolution of the dice in. Since you are paying the same amount of resources as dice that your rolled in on her, naturally her effect is strongest in the early game when she has no extra dices on her. You could always build up her partner, however resources may be an issue. This ability is one that you can not just blindly activate, you have to pick a partner that works will with her and build a deck around maximizing it. At this time I can not think of too much, but I would like to add that you can still play non-die cards on her with no drawback. This ability is one that I feel your “good” players are going to know how to play. If a person don’t know how to play it or misplays it, it is going to comeback and bite that person. It is a very strong ability that I am sure will see play.

Deck Options:

Alright now comes the fun. Now that we have looked at what she brings, who do we pair her with? I think taking her at her single die version is a really solid choice however at this time I am going to be looking at partners for her elite version. Two of them to be exact.

The first character that we can pair with is, of course, Rey (AW38). This deck would be a solid mono-Blue Hero deck that I believe would hit harder then any other mono-Blue Hero deck with two Elite characters. You have action-cheating with Rey, solid damage output between the two characters after Ahsoka turns on Rey’s damage sides, an ability that allows you to ready, and a consistent mono-color deck. The one draw back is however is the fact that you will be paying to build up Rey, so activating Ahsoka ability might be a challenge. I think Secret Mission (EW102) could be away to help with that that, but I think the answer is just to play smart with this pairing. The jury is still out on this one being better than Rey/Qui-Qon (AW37), but I think it will be one of the most common decks we see with her.  This is the deck I plan on building with her for fun.

The second character that we can pair with her is another one of my favorites and is one that could answer the question of “How do I keep paying for Ahsoka’s Ability?” Simple, you just play a character that doesn’t need you to play upgrades. Hera Syndulla (EW25) fits this role perfectly as you do not need to pay for upgrades to build her up. Her focus will be saving you money by cheating Vehicles out to the board, while you use your main resources to swing with Ahsoka twice. This is also made stronger by the card Recycle (EW149). Cheating a card in with Hera and then trashing it to then pay for Ahsoka ability with one or two upgrades on her may be a good way to play this pairing. Hera also brings some solid Red cards that may work well in this deck as well. In theory I think that the two would work somewhat decently, however it may be a determent clashing the two different play styles together. I would recommend at least trying the deck and seeing if you can get it to work.

Final Thoughts:

Ahsoka is an enigma. She brings so much to the table, but trying to crack her to bring out that potential is a challenge especially when we don’t have all the cards from Empire at War. I do believe that we will see her on a competitive level, but at what level I can not tell at this time. No matter what “tier” she may be however, She will still see play due to her icon status and affordable point cost. She is a legendary and she deserves that rarity based on who she is, her card, and what she means to a good potion of the Star Wars fandom. As I mentioned before, she will have a deck with me no matter how “good” she is or not. I hope you enjoyed this brief look at Ahsoka and please feel free to leave your ideas and thoughts in the comments below. Till next time, May the Force be With You readers and always remember……Ahsoka Lives!!!
