Card Dissection: Mace Windu (EW34)

Let’s get this party started (get it? Because Mace apparently doesn’t like parties and his most famous line is “This party’s over” (in Star Wars, that is)). Ok, I will stop with the terrible puns, but let’s get right down to it. Empire at War has been revealed and the first card I was excited to see was, you got it, Mace Windu. Every since I saw him in Attack of the Clones I knew he was a bad ass; how else do you live in a galaxy far far away wielding a purple lightsaber and not be a bad ass. Not only does Mace show up on his own card, but he is also on Master of the Council (EW36) (we will get back to that card in a minute), which is saying something as he beat out Yoda for that card. But what has me most excited is the potential for Mace.

Mace Windu from Star Wars: Destiny Empire at War

Overview of Mace Windu

Mace Windu will be the newest addition to the Hero Force cards, at 22 cost for an elite with 12 health he is slightly higher than Luke (AW35). Only slightly though, his action is what more than makes up for the added point cost. The ability to remove a die and defeat a character with 2 or less remaining health. With an ability like that it is almost like FFG is trying to give us an answer to Palpatine (SR11) for the Force sensitive cards.

Possible Combos

Out the gate, I consider an elite Mace Windu matched alongside a Padawan (AW36) to reach the max point allotment to be an exciting start. This team would require a great deal of play testing to find the harmony of upgrades, supports, and events. Although right off the bat I would add Master of the Council into this deck. While the card is a 4 resource, its ability to make Mace that much more lethal can not be overlooked, especially with its special of making a character ready again.

Dream Showdown

At the end of the day, what I whole and truly want to see is a showdown between Palpatine and Mace. However, in Star Wars Destiny at the current moment that dual would be close to one sided just like it was in the movie. I mean really who can compete against a guy who shoots lightening from his finger tips and does a 960 spin from a crouch position, that is seriously some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-level stuff. IF and I must stress the IF, FFG were to come out with a Jedi Holocron (which would be awesome) with the same ability as the Sith Holocron (AW16) then this would become a bit more of an even game, especially to play a 4 cost card such as Master of the Council onto Mace using the Holocron special.

Conclusion

Mace Windu is a great addition to the force side of the heroes with enormous potential for damage output and a lethal action allowing you to defeat a character with 2 remaining health. While the heroes are looking to have an increase in support with Empire at War and Mace Windu being a great addition the force still feels strong with villains. Mace’s damage output and action are an enormous help with those looking to take a more aggro approach to deck building which can help when going up against mill decks. I look forward to getting Mace into some play testing and the potential of him at tournaments!
