How That Works: Resolving Dice “Ranged or Melee Damage”

Resolving a die showing ranged or melee damage is an attack, and will result in either loss of health from your opponent’s characters or loss of shields. You may resolve any and all dice you choose showing the same symbol. In this case, EITHER the ranged damage symbol (blaster) OR melee damage symbol (lightsabers). Meaning, if you have 4 dice showing ranged damage, you could choose to only resolve 1,2,3 or 4 of them. It does not have to be all-or-nothing.

There are a couple key things to remember when looking to see if you can resolve a die.

1- Does it have a cost associated (little yellow resource token under the die image)?

When resolving a die face showing a cost associated, you MUST spend the required amount to be able to perform resolve die action. If you do not have any resources, you cannot resolve these dice, unless a card ability says they can be. The Rebel War Room (AW171) battlefield is an example of how you can use an ability to circumvent resolving a die with an associated cost without having to pay that cost.

2- Is it a modified die (+ symbol showing and blue)?

These dice CAN ONLY be resolved simultaneously with another unmodified die (black symbol showing and no + symbol present), and that damage cannot be split among different characters. Unlike unmodified, modified dice are resolved with an unmodified die and create one source with the unmodified die it’s attached to. Unless a card ability says they can be resolved alone, you must always attach them with an unmodified die. Awakening (AW124) is a great example of how you can use an ability to bypass this restriction on resolving modified dice.

3- How to resolve a your dice:

As mentioned above, modified dice can only be resolved with at least 1 unmodified die and the damage ADDS to the unmodified die and CANNOT be split. With the image provided, I’ll show you a few different ways you can resolve your dice.

The Hired Gun (AW47) die is showing a 3 ranged damage with 1 resource cost, the Millennium Falcon (AW49) die is showing 4 ranged damage, both Black Market (AW64) dice are showing +2 MODIFIED ranged damage and lastly, Han Solo (AW46) is showing 2 ranged damage.

You could resolve everything together, one die at a time, but all in the same action and deal 13 damage to one character, paying the 1 resource for Hired Gun, or you could split the pool in various ways.

You could also choose to resolve the two modified Black Market dice with Han Solo dealing 6 ranged to a single character at the same time (modified dice get resolved as a group with the unmodified die). Then you could resolve 4 damage from the Millennium Falcon and the 3 from the Hired Gun to a second character (unmodified dice get resolved one at a time, but all in the same action). Again, the only requirement for resolving dice is that that you’ve paid the required resources and that you always have a modified dice grouped together with an unmodified dice.

It’s important to note that each die is resolved individually, unless it’s 1 or more modified dice + 1 unmodified die. This is important when looking at abilities like we see on Count Dooku (AW9) “Before this character is dealt 1 or more damage, you may discard a card from your hand to give him 1 shield.” If you carefully read into the wording, this means that Count Dooku’s ability can be triggered once per source of damage, and as explained above, each die (or each unmodified die + any modified dice) is considered a single source. So if you decide to resolve 3 dice each showing one damage against Dooku, your opponent could choose to discard a card three times (once for each die) to gain a shield three times, rendering those attacks harmless. But if you resolve a single die showing 3 damage, or an unmodified die showing 1 ranged damage along with a modified die showing +2 ranged damage, your opponent could only discard one card to gain a single shield, allowing the other two damage to go through.

Hope this clarifies things, I know it’s a bit long winded. Feel free to post any comments and or questions!
