Card Dissection: Chirrut Îmwe (SR35) “Blind Warrior”

Chirrut Îmwe, the Blind Warrior, Guardian of the Whills, steps into battlefields of Star Wars: Destiny to aid his allies in struggle against their opponents. Guided by the Force, he helps his friends with impressive fighting skills but also, thanks to his great faith in the Force, he can turn bad luck and missteps into an advantage. Let’s see what he can bring to the table!

Introduction

Chirrut Imwe (SR35) is a rare, Blue Hero character, coming in with a field cost of 12 for a single die and 16 for elite. He has pretty good health pool of 11 life points. His die sides are as follow: 1 range damage, +2 range damage, 2 melee damage, +1 melee damage, 1 resource and, of course, the standard blank. His ability reads: “You cannot play Blue abilities on this character. After you activate this character, you may reroll all of your dice showing blanks (-).” Artwork is done by Darren Tan, and in my opinion, captures really well the character of Chirrut, his focus, strong will, and calmness in the middle of the fight.

Let’s study in more detail particular aspects of our hero.

Character’s ability

Chirrut’s ability is quite unique in the world of Star Wars: Destiny. You have to think how to best utilize it to your advantage. Not being able to use Blue abilities on this character is limiting, to say the least, and your best bet is probably to go for a dual- or triple-colour deck. Mono-blue would probably not be the best option, unless you’re playing at least 3 characters. In that situation, you may be okay with playing abilities only on your other characters and let Chirrut do his own thing. If there is one really positive thing about this part of his ability, it’s the connection to the character’s theming. As we know, he is not Force-sensitive in terms of being able to use the Force as he will. Instead, he is guided by it and it lets him “see”, even though he is blind.

Second part of his ability is, on the other hand, the high point in our hero’s arsenal. Being able to reroll all blanks after activation will always be a good thing for you. Especially in the situation presented before, when you run many characters with many upgrades/abilities. Chances for many blanks then are pretty high. You, of course, will always want to activate Chirrut last, unless you have some way to ready him again. Anyhow, quite a strong ability with many uses if played correctly.

Die rundown

Character die looks straightforward, but once again pays great tribute to Chirrut himself. He is a strong warrior, with great skill in melee combat, which is his primary way of dealing with opponents. That’s probably why his standard melee side have a value of 2. On the other hand, when needed, he can get his lightbow and use it with great skill. It’s more situational, so that’s probably why he have modified side on his die with value of 2, but standard damage is only 1. Other than that, he have 1 resource side; not impressive, but welcomed nonetheless

With this mix of 2 types of damage, Chirrut is good companion for other damaging characters, but he’s not really a high hitter himself. Let’s see with whom we can pair him.

Characters combos

Obvious teaming would be running Elite Chirrut with his good friend Baze Malbus (SR26), which adds up to exactly 30 points and gives us really good ranged damage output and decent melee.

For a mixed-damage combo, we could give Chewbacca (SR43) a try with our hero Chirrut. We wouldn’t be able to field both characters elite, so our best bet would probably be running eChewbacca. That way, we have high enough damage and resource generation to pose a threat, but not much control in terms of dice.

Maybe we could try elite Mon Mothma (SR27) then. Better control, lesser damage. And we have 4 dice to start with. Not bad!

Conclusion

Overall, Chirrut is decent character with peculiar ability and decent damage and not that high cost. But he’s not really your main character, as he works better as a support for other characters. The biggest problem with him right now is finding him good pair up, in which he can shine. Using him right definitely requires testing and understanding of his position in a team. Maybe in future sets we will see someone, who will fill his gaps and synergise with him really well.

But that’s all for now. Hope you liked this little article. Tell us what you think of Chirrut and with what characters you would consider playing him. Happy rolling, may the Force be with you, and remember to not leave your Destiny to chance!
