Card Dissection: Director Krennic (SR3) “Cruel But Brilliant”

Here we have the man responsible for the construction of the original Death Star, Director Orson Krennic (SR3). A charismatic, if fiery, official within the Empire, his drive and unscrupulous behavior helped elevate him through the ranks enough for him to go toe-to-toe with the venerated Grand Moff Tarkin.

Artwork

The portrait, created by Darren Tan, beautifully captures a man who is always looking over his shoulder. Even though he’s a successful Imperial officer, Krennic never felt that he got the respect he deserved, and was always wary of rivals, both real and imagined. His sense of self-importance is reflected in his dress, a white Imperial officer’s tunic with black trousers, similar to the uniforms worn by Imperial Intelligence or the ISB. Even though the uniform catches the eye anyway, he also wears a white cape not commonly seen in the Empire.

Die Faces and Abilities

Director Krennic’s die shows his preference for control through coercion and threats rather than direct force, but the single 2-Ranged side means that he is willing to get his own hands dirty when necessary. His die shows, in addition to the Ranged side, 1 Focus, 2 Disrupt, 2 Discard, 1 Resource, and a blank. The Disrupt and Discard sides reflect his ability to read his opponents and force them into situations they won’t like.

The real strength – and weakness – to Director Krennic is shown in his Ability: “After you activate this character, if you control the battlefield, roll a Death Trooper (SR1) die into your pool. Set aside that die after it is resolved or removed.” This gives you a greater chance to roll damage, since Krennic himself only has the one side with damage, but it can only be used if you control the battlefield. While highly thematic, since he was almost never seen on screen without his Death Troopers, this means that Director Krennic is only fully capable if you also have a Death Trooper in your collection.

Possible Combos

Director Krennic by himself is definitely a control character. Pairing him with another control character, such as Jabba the Hutt (AW20) or Unkar Plutt (SR21), can cause headaches on the other side of the table. For more thematic decks, pairing him with a Death Trooper is obvious, but single-die Krennic will also pair with 2 First Order Stormtroopers (AW2) for “more reliable” damage output. Of course, if you own a Death Trooper, always keep that die on hand for Krennic’s ability.

At his cost of 15/19, I can’t really recommend using him unless you do have a Death Trooper on hand. And even then, with his ability limited to battlefield control, it’s hard to recommend him. Maybe some more play time with Krennic can change that opinion.

  1. I keep wanting to make a deck with this guy.
At 15 pts he can pair with a regular trooper and a nightsister (to splash blue) or a tie fighter pilot.
I am leaning towards the nightsister because their dice are rather similar with disruption/discard options.
Out of all the cards I wish to play with this combo the one that comes to mind is Lure of Power.
throw in A ton of control options and I think we have potential.
    Some other cards.
    Dark Presence
    Training
High ground +other control the battlefield cards like We have them now and Lockdown.
    Imperial inspection.
