Destiny Origins: Who is Count Dooku?

Count Dooku, everyone’s favorite Sith noble. Played to perfection by the legendary Christopher Lee, he epitomized the aloof, powerful lord, hungry for political influence. But he wasn’t always a Sith Lord.

Count Dooku disapproves.

Early Life and Jedi Training

Dooku was born on the planet of Sorenno in the year 102 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). In his youth, Dooku was taken by the Jedi Order, where he became a padawan under the tutelage of Yoda. Upon reaching the rank of Jedi Master, he took Qui-Gon Jinn (AW37) under his wing as his apprentice. After some time as a Jedi Master, he became unhappy with the Jedi Order, the Republic, and the corruption within the Galactic Senate.

Fall Into the Dark Side

His disillusionment led him to joining Darth Sidious. He sent Jango Fett (AW21) to the Kaminoans for them to use as a template for the clone army. During the lead-up to the Clone Wars, Dooku recruited another former Jedi, Asajj Ventress, as his apprentice and personal assassin.

Dooku started gathering star systems and convincing them to leave the Republic and create the Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS). During this time, he recruited the Trade Federation by promising to assassinate then-Senator Padme Amidala (AW48).

The Clone Wars

Just prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars, Count Dooku captured Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis and tried to convince Obi-Wan to join his cause. Obi-Wan refused, and Dooku also captured Anakin Skywalker and Padme Amidala when they tried to rescue Obi-Wan. Obi-Wan, Padme, and Anakin were sentenced to death in a Geonosian arena, but the rest of the Jedi Masters arrived with the clone army from Kamino to rescue them.

During the battle between the Geonosian droid army and the clone army, Dooku fled the scene. Before he could leave the planet, Obi-Wan, Anakin, and Yoda confronted him. Dooku defeated Obi-Wan and Anakin, then fought Yoda to a draw, and was able to escape Geonosis. He went to Coruscant and met with Darth Sidious, informing him that the war had begun, just as he had planned.

Dooku and Sidious recruited General Grievous (AW3), and they trained him in the use of lightsabers, specifically to fight other Jedi. Grievous was given the rank of General and placed in command of the droid army, while Dooku oversaw the political side of the conflict.

Dooku attempted to get the Hutts to join the CIS by having Asajj Ventress kidnap Jabba the Hutt’s (AW20) son and claiming that Anakin Skywalker had killed him. His plan failed when Jabba learned the truth, and Dooku left Tatooine.

Later in the War, Darth Sidious contacted Dooku and warned him that his apprentice, Ventress, was getting too powerful. Dooku told her that she was no longer his apprentice, and she would soon die. Ventress, along with her fellow Nightsisters (AW12), attacked him, posing as Jedi. He was able to fight them off, but never identified who his attackers were.

Dooku’s Death

Count Dooku really disapproves.

Toward the end of the War, Count Dooku staged a kidnapping of Chancellor Palpatine during the Battle of Coruscant. Anakin and Obi-Wan fought their way through the intense space battle and landed on General Grievous’s command ship, the Invisible Hand. Dooku confronted them, with the Chancellor restrained in a chair behind him. He defeated Obi-Wan, then had a mighty duel with Anakin. Anakin was able to overpower him and cut off both of his hands. With Dooku at his mercy, Anakin wanted to arrest him and take him to the Jedi Council for trial, but Palpatine had different plans. Palpatine, using the Dark Side of the Force, convinced Anakin to kill Dooku.

  1. Dooku did technically not fight Yoda to a draw. Yoda gained the upper hand which forced Dooku to retreat.
