The Chance Cube Reacts: Spirit of Rebellion Pre-release Event

Yesterday, Fantasy Flight Games (FFG) announced a preview event for the Spirit of Rebellion expansion for Star Wars: Destiny. The event will take place April 1-2 at local retailers around the world (check local listings). Stores will have alternate art cards to hand out, but only to those who complete mini-objectives listed on “Mission Brief” cards. There will also be open play events and boosters available for sale (in limited amounts).

The Force is Strong

The Chance Cube really likes pre-release events, and FFG seems to be hitting all the right high points with this one. We love the use of “Mission Brief” cards as a means to give out alternate art cards. The Mission Brief cards list a set of objectives, such as “Have 6 resources,” or “Play 2 games as Hero/Villain”, that can be met during free play. This gives the sense that you have to “earn” those exclusive cards, but the objectives are fairly easy to meet, so there isn’t a grind or real skill barrier to getting them. One objective is “Bring an extra deck,” so just walk in the door with a couple of your own existing decks, and boom, you get an alternate art Death Trooper (SR1) card. Of course, with supply being scarce, some may not have enough cards to have multiple decks. With that in mind, each alternate card has two objectives to earn it, only one of which must be met.

The FFG article also had a couple new spoilers. There is a new Yellow character that will give Darth Vader (AW10) and Luke Skywalker (AW35) a run for their money: IG-88. The spoiler is partially obscured, but what it shows is promising. A die with a 3-Ranged side, 2-Ranged side, and 12 health. The only things missing are the point cost and special ability. As long as they’re similar to Vader or Luke, we have a viable alternative to Blue for heavy burst damage. That is, until we get to Overkill (SR33). A Red Hero ability upgrade with a +1 Ranged, +2 Ranged, and two +3 ranged sides!? Sure, it’s got two blank sides, but is a solid contender to pair with Leia Organa (AW28) or Poe Dameron (AW29). The last new spoiler is the Command Shuttle, a Blue Villain support. We can’t tell what the die faces are, but it appears that the special ability allows Command Shuttle to use the special ability of one of your characters. This is perfect to pair with Kylo Ren (AW11) and/or the new Darth Vader (SR10).

I’ve Got a Bad Feeling About This…

The news, however, is not all blue milk and cuddly Ewoks. The article says there will be a limit of 3 booster boxes, with a limit of 3 boosters per buyer. Also, there will only be enough alternate art cards at each store for 12 players. Admittedly, these are pretty minor. The booster limit allows more people to get a taste of Rebellion (remember this is a pre-release event, not a launch event). And alternate art cards wouldn’t be exclusive if everybody got them.

Search Your Feelings

Will the single print run, combined with store pre-orders, limit supply in a similar manner to Awakenings? Hard to say. Will retailers be able to order boxes beyond the ones included in each pre-release package, or is it a hard 3-box limit? Can local stores sell more than 3 boosters to each person? We imagine retailers wouldn’t want to sit on unsellable product until the official release. Until April 1-2, we wont have answers to these questions. Maybe not even later in the year. All we know is that we can’t wait until April to try out the new stuff.
