Product Review: Zen Bins, Destiny Edition!

For those of you looking for a great storage solution as well as a way to transport a team or two to tournaments, look no further! Zen Bins originally hit the market a few years ago with a custom product for Dice Masters. I backed it immediately and can say that I never had any regrets. Two-point-something odd years later, they are back on KickStarter with a storage solution for Star Wars: Destiny.

I was fortunate enough to be sent a prototype to test out, and see how I liked it. Before anyone thinks I’m only doing this review because I was sent a copy, you’re wrong. I went out of my way to contact them to get a copy so that I could review it because I loved their Dice Masters product so much.

Quality

Now, one thing that has been mentioned to me while toting it around was that it looked flimsy. While I can understand that impression, it’s certainly not the case. As I said, with my Dice Masters Zen Bin, I used it a couple times a week, and most of the time, forgot it in my bag while walking around.

Yes, some women, myself included, have bags large enough and full enough to not really notice a Zen Bin full of dice hanging out in there. Haha.

In that entire time, almost 2 years, I’ve never had a single incident of the Zen Bin accidentally opening up on me and spilling contents out, nor has any of the product inside been damaged. This includes many flights to and from Canada and the US. I even had a case where someone dropped a drink on top, and all my contents remained dry! Not that it was needed in my opinion, but they have increased the gauge of plastic used on the Zen Bins made for Star Wars: Destiny. So rest assured that your product will be kept safe.

Also, MADE IN THE USA, that probably means something to a lot of people. While I certainly love a good deal, I also love a good deal that is done without the use of child labour!

Functionality

I’ll break this section down into each respective part of the tray itself. But let me say, they have incorporated a great storage solution that also makes a great tournament-ready tray.

The Base Tray

The base of the Zen Bin, like the standard or middle tray, has enough space to hold 18 dice and more than enough tokens for your game. It also has a card holder with enough room to hold 70 unsleeved cards (who does that? Haha!) and 35 sleeved cards. Underneath the base, there are a couple nubs on each side that can hold the rule sheet in place. The nice thing about the compartments for the tokens is they have a rounded bottom, so it’s really easy to slide the tokens out. No more getting them stuck in a corner!

The Standard Tray

The standard tray, much like the base, can hold 18 dice, however it does not have any compartments for tokens. This tray does have an additional card storage side where you can store 25 sleeved or 50 unsleeved cards on each side.

The Lid

Within the lid itself is a nifty little blinder. When you first open your lid, you’ll have to pop that blinder out, and then it can be placed directly on top of your dice in the base tray. This will keep the dice nicely concealed from your opponent during tournament play.

Cost

Right now, the base pledge on KickStarter is $15 USD, and the second pledge level is $30 USD. They also give you the option to add any additional trays for an additional cost.

What will the base pledge get you you might be asking? 1 base tray which holds 18 dice,  roughly 70 unsleeved or 35 sleeved cards, and a lot of tokens. 2 standard/middle trays which holds 36 dice, 200 unsleeved or 100 sleeved cards, 1 lid, and 1 blinder. So a total of 54 dice, and 135 sleeved or 270 unsleeved cards.

The second pledge level gets you 1 base tray which holds 18 dice, roughly 70 unsleeved or 35 sleeved cards, and a lot of tokens. And 8 standard trays! That’s right! 8 of them! That’s enough for 144 total dice, 800 total unsleeved or 400 sleeved cards, and includes a lid and a blinder. So a total of 162 dice, and 870 unsleeved or 435 sleeved cards. So yes, this is more than enough to safely store an ENTIRE Star Wars: Destiny playset (2 each of everything, and 3 and/or 4 of some).

Conclusion

Overall, from what I’ve seen out there for custom storage solutions, this is the most reasonably priced one that doesn’t take up half of your closet. Don’t get me wrong, I love the foam ones, but dang they are NOT compact. I love it, and I love how easy it is to use.
