Card Dissection: On The Hunt (AW26)

An elegant card for a more civilized age, On The Hunt (AW26) offers Yellow decks various tools to help deal with different threats.  While overlooked by many, this has the potential to offer exciting options to most decks.

Artwork

The artwork for this card is surprisingly disappointing. It’s not that the artwork is bad, far from it.  It’s that the artwork could have been so much more. When I hear the term “On The Hunt” with respect to Yellow Star Wars: Destiny cards, my mind goes immediately to Boba Fett tracking the Millennium Falcon after it detaches from the Star Destroyer, or even all the bounty hunters on the Executor getting information from Darth Vader about capturing Han Solo. What I don’t see is a nondescript person wearing a mask and wide-brimmed hat looking at a small hologram. There is nothing wrong with the image, but I was looking, and hoping, for more.

Point Cost

This is a one Resource cost Ability Upgrade. I really like what it does for that cost. Why do I say that? For a single point, you AW021 - Jango Fettget an average die that really goes great with Jango Fett (AW21) or a Tusken Raider (AW22) as they both provide for ranged and melee damage on their character die.  But, it’s the two – yes two – Special sides that make this Upgrade worth it. How? Because you not only have the option to remove all shields from a character, but for an additional resource you can remove one of their Character or Upgrade dice. Worth it. Especially since the Blue Event Intimidate (AW84) may be free to play, but all you are able to do is remove shields with it.

Die

For a single Resource, you get an Upgrade that has a +1 Ranged, +1 Melee, 1 Discard, Special, Special, and Blank. As noted above, the Special on the card is what makes it worth it. With the amount of decks that currently run things that give shields, or use shields, having this upgrade in play makes their actions less than ideal with respect to shields. Again, the Ranged and Melee modification sides go great with Jango Fett and a Tusken Raider. The Discard side, while nice, isn’t really as useful as you might think. Also, the lack of a Resource side can hurt extra Resource generation. Currently, it is the only Villain-only Yellow card that doesn’t have one.

Deck Options

This is a staple in decks that include Jango Fett, Tusken Raider, and to a small extent Bala-Tik, as long as Yellow is the focus of the deck. For example, using it in a Darth Vader (AW10) deck may not be the smartest move. With its single point cost, I will generally have an extra resource available to remove a Character or Upgrade die. This card is great in the early game so you can get some usage out of it, and then discard it to reduce the cost of a better Upgrade. Finally, with the Imperial Armory (AW169) upgrade, you can play it for free.

Final Thoughts

I really do like this card. While other upgrade offer more usefulness, at a cost of a single Resource, you can’t beat what this upgrade can do.

  1. Politely, I have to disagree about the artwork. Surely you must know who Cad Bane is – because he’s definitely not just some “nondescript” person! Arguably second in notoriety among bounty hunters next to Boba. I’ll cut people a break though since Clone Wars wasn’t necessarily as popular or accessible…
