Card Dissection: Rise Again (SR76)

Welcome to the fourth Card Dissection of the recent Spirit of Rebellion spoilers! Today we’ll take a look at Rise Again (SR76), my personal favorite card revealed so far.

The Art

I really like the art for this card. The angle really brings back this scene from Revenge of the Sith. The fact that the art shows Darth Vader AS he is rising just really hits home for me. Overall, it’s thematically perfect for this card!

Ability

The art maybe be great, but this ability is amazing. It’s the largest healing ability we have so far that doesn’t require a character to be defeated. Healing five health is huge. For most blue characters, it’s half their health. That can undo an entire round or two for your opponent. On top of that, it makes discarding or replacing blue upgrades a lot less risky, since you can just bring them back later. It’s a huge swing in tempo and can be incredibly demoralizing to face. Also, it’s a thematic home-run. Not only do you save a character from possibly being defeated, but they also get “upgraded” like Darth Vader. Maybe we’ll get a robotic hand upgrade in the future?

Cost

This is the obvious drawback to this card. Five resources is quite a bit. You either have to devote a lot of cards to gaining resources, or have to skip using resources for a few turns, which isn’t very good. Such a high cost isn’t that bad though, since it really pushes you to have to use it late game, when you have a character nearly defeated. So while it does cost a lot, the decks that want it probably won’t have much of a problem playing it, as long as you don’t draw it super early in the game.

Deck options

The main reason I’m so excited for this card, is that it gives control and mid-range decks a great card to fight aggro. The absolute worst thing you can do against an aggro deck is heal your characters. Healing slows them down, which means you force them to play the long game, which is want control and mid-range want. I honestly think this will be a big part of the meta for a while, especially with Palpatine (SR11).

Final thoughts

I love this card, and I’ll say it again, it’s my favorite card in Spirit of the Rebellion so far. It also makes me wonder what other awesome cards we’ll see as this game goes on. Will aggro get faster to compensate for healing in villain decks? Can aggro even get faster? Will there be ways to stop events? With a game like Star Wars: Destiny being so young, anything is possible!
