Card Dissection: Carbon-Freezing Chamber (SR151) – Giving the Cold Shoulder

Thanks for checking out this edition of Card Dissection. Today we will be looking at Carbon-Freezing Chamber (SR151), a battlefield from the upcoming Spirit of Rebellion set.

The Art

Steam rising from the floor vents. A warm, orange-red glow. And an ominous hole right in the center of the floor. The picture perfectly brings forth images of Darth Vader and Boba Fett looking threatening, as well as the iconic slab of carbonite with a bas-relief Han Solo, silently screaming in agony.

Ability

Carbon-Freezing Chamber is a battlefield that allows the claimant to choose a character die and keep that die from being rolled in the next round. The key here is that the Claim ability uses the word “choose”, and not “Remove”. This means that any character die is susceptible, not just one that is in the dice pool. This make the timing of claiming this battlefield less of an issue, as you don’t have to claim this as soon as your targeted die is in the pool.

Deck Options

Carbon-Freezing Chamber is tailor-made to be included in a dice-control deck, as it most definitely controls dice in the best way possible: remove them from the equation completely. In combination with Outpost (AW53) and Cunning (AW65), this can get multiple character dice out of play for a round if you roll well. Even removing a single character die can be crippling against certain builds (e.g. Darth Vader (AW10)/eJabba the Hutt (AW20)), especially early in the game before many, if any, upgrades can be played. The downside is that it can easily be turned against you if your opponent claims it before you can.

Final Thoughts

As with any battlefield, this can swing from asset to hindrance, based on who claims it first. Obviously, being able to remove character dice is pretty powerful stuff, but it is balanced by the threat that it can be used against you. Combine this with Outpost and Cunning in your deck, and it’s a possible 3-dice vacuum, leaving your opponent without much to roll during the next round.

Do you agree? Let us hear it in the comments below, and thanks for taking time out to read my opinions. “May the dice be with you.”
