Destiny Origins: Who is Captain Phasma?

There are few characters in the Star Wars universe as striking as Captain Phasma (AW1). Perhaps underused in Episode VII: The Force Awakens, she’ll be back in her shining armor in Episode VIII: The Last Jedi but what is the story behind the First Order’s Stormtrooper Commander?

Captain Phasma cuts an imposing figure in her chromium platerd armor, standing at least a head taller than everyone bar a certain Wookie. The armor is made from chromium salvaged from a Naboo yacht once owned by Emperor Palpatine. It serves a dual purpose, protecting Phasma as armour should but also as a symbol of power, given it’s unique origins. There’s also an ideological link between Phasma, the First Order she serves and the tyrannical Empire of Palpatine.

The rank of Captain would seem to be at odds with the actual status she enjoys within the upper echelons of the First Order’s command structure. She is one of the highest ranking military officials, alongside General Hux and Kylo Ren (AW11). Only Supreme Leader ranks above this trio.

Phasma is another military commander that likes to lead from the front, not unlike General Veers (AW4) who I looked at last time here. When the First Order land an assault force Stormtroopers (AW2) on Jakku, Phasma is right there in the midst of it. Her final act on Jakku is to issue the order that sees unarmed villagers slaughtered hy her troops.

During the battle, Finn (AW45) has his breakdown after seeing a fellow trooper killed. Once back aboard the Resurgent class Star Destroyer Finalizer, Phasma is right there ordering Finn to turn his weapon over for inspection. She doesn’t miss a thing. Unfortunately for her she runs into Finn again later on when she’s ambushed by him and his Resistance friends Han Solo (AW46) and Chewbacca. It doesn’t go well for Phasma with her being forced to take down the shield protecting Starkiller Base (Frozen Wastes AW168) before being dumped down a garbage chute.

Phasma’s card doesn’t immediately strike me as a great one. Two damage sides are okay, but not amazing. There’s also a focus, discard and resource side with one blank side. As I say it’s not ground shaking but one major plus point is that there are no resource costs on the die. Another bonus is that there are no modified sides, removing reliance on other dice in your pool to resolve Captain Phasma’s.

Running Phasma also gives your opponent cause for concern thanks to the ability to bestow Guardian status on non-unique characters. Together with Count Dooku (AW9) and a First Order Stormtrooper (AW2) there’s plenty for an opponent to think about here given you can move damagenfrom Phasma over to the Stormtrooper. As I say this gives an opponent a lot of headaches and makes this cards very strong in the right deck.
