Product Review: Crafted Storage

I’ve been looking at all the different storage options for Star Wars: Destiny lately trying to find the one that fits me the best and this has led me to trying out pretty much everything I can think of. Some of these have worked better than others, but my most recent purchase was something I found rather unique and wanted to share with everyone. It is from a company called Crafted Storage who have been making storage solutions for X-Wing for a while now but recently entered the Star Wars: Destiny arena. I was lucky enough to be able to get an early deck box order in and was beyond impressed with it.

Appearance (4.25/5.0)

Seeing as how you can completely customize the sides and top of your box the appearance of these can vary widely.  I ordered mine with etched and engraved sides to check out the difference and while the etching is free and works the engraving looks vastly superior. There is also an inlay option that looks beautiful but does add cost to the box.  For those that want something customized and great looking all  while keeping the price low; the etching option is for you! Another nice touch that comes with the storage boxes is a simple piece of felt that you can order in a range of colors that fits into the bottom of each section. Not only does it keep your dice and cards from getting knocked around but it also adds a nice flair of color.

Utility (4.75/5.0)

The utility factor of these boxes is the major selling point when I bought mine. The “tournament tray” is by far the best option I have come across for storing and viewing dice while playing in an event. It comes with a lid that has slide in supports that let you rest the tray on them to prop up dice to keep them out of your opponents view. The tournament tray has room for 20 dice and a deck, though when I was testing and using mine I found that it works better to take out one of the dice dividers to give your deck a bit more room that way you can easily get it out by sacrificing a spot for 4 dice. The added dice tray which functions as a lid also is great though not something that is 100% necessary especially at a tournament where table space may be somewhat limited. Just for the tournament tray itself though I think this option is a very strong consideration for being the best tournament solution that I have found.

Durability (3.75/5.0)

The durability department is where I have my biggest concerns about the longevity of this box. The construction and materials that it are made out of are sturdy and will stand the test of time, but my issue is with how everything fits together. The lid and dice tray are just friction fitted so a jostle or hard bump at the wrong time can knock them loose spilling your stuff everywhere. I went out and purchased some wide rubber bands in order to hold everything a bit more securely during transport but that isn’t the most elegant of solutions. Outside of that one negative I have a feeling the box itself will hold up well.

Other Considerations

This box does have some assembly required but nothing too excessive just a bit of gluing and clamping to get things secured properly. The price range is also comparable to a similarly sized Ultimate Guard deck box and with the added customization it ends up being a better deal as you get something that is very uniquely yours. The other thing to note is that you can order any combination of the three available “boxes” for Star Wars: Destiny to create your custom version.  The third option that I did not choose for mine was a deck/card storage tray that was larger and could hold nearly a full Awakenings core set of unsleeved cards or 2-3 extra decks. You can also store your tokens in the dice tray or if you are running fewer dice in a deck inside one of the segments in the tournament tray, outside of that though there isn’t a “perfect” spot to put your tokens without further customization after purchase. Also after taking pictures and filming the short review I added a layer of stain to my deck box to darken it a bit and it came out fantastic.

Overall Rating: 4.25/5.0

Final Thoughts

While not perfect and not for everyone this option from Crafted Storage is at the top of my list based upon the utility and customization that it offers.  The tournament tray as a stand alone product would have been enough to grab my interest and move me to purchase this.  The added utility and customization were icing on the cake.
