“A Diplomatic Mission” – An Advanced Multiplayer Variant for 4-6 Players

Our third Multiplayer Variant option is an Advanced format that requires a bit of preparation and some extra materials to be played. Fans of social deduction games will likely be drawn to this format, as it increases the player interaction across the table and adds a layer of subtext, mystery, and complexity to the game. This format is recommended for players who have already mastered the basic rules. Of all of the multiplayer variants, this one is perhaps the most likely to need tweaks for balance after sufficient playtesting, so if you have any thoughts after giving it a try, please feel free to leave them in the comments below!

A Diplomatic Mission

Players: 4-6

Special Rules for Deck Construction: Each player’s team must include at least one unique character.

Special Components Needed:

4 Mission Failure tokens (You may use any token, coin, or die for this.)

Mission Cards (one Success card and one Fail card per player).

Allegiance cards (showing either “Imperial Loyalist” or “Rebel Scum”). The number of each cards needed is shown on the table below:

Setup: At the beginning of the game, each player selects one of their unique characters to be their “Diplomat.” Allegiance cards (based on the numbers found in the table above) are shuffled into a deck, and each player is dealt a face-down Allegiance card. After examining their card, all players close their eyes and one person instructs the players who received the Rebel Scum cards to open their eyes and silently identify the other Rebel Scum players at the table. Then all players close their eyes again and reopen them simultaneously.

Goal:

For Imperial Loyalists, the goal of the game is to defeat the Diplomats of all Rebel Scum players before 3 Missions are failed.

For Rebel Scum players, the goal of the game is to add 3 Mission Failure tokens to the center of the table.

Special Rules: To begin the game and during each round of play, players follow the normal Free-For-All rules for Multiplayer games found in Part 9 of the Star Wars: Destiny Rules Reference. After all players have passed consecutively, the round ends. Before the Upkeep Phase at the end of each round, players will need to resolve the Mission for the round. Any player with a readied Diplomat may commit that character to the Mission. If fewer than half of the players (rounded up) commit a character to the mission, then the mission is an automatic failure. In order to resolve the Mission, players will each take a pair of Success/Fail cards, select one of the cards, and add it to a Mission pile in the center of the table. The other card is added to a Mission Discard pile. Both the Mission pile and the Mission Discard pile are shuffled, and the cards in the Mission pile are revealed. If all of the cards in the Mission pile are Success cards, then the mission succeeds. Otherwise, the Mission fails, and a Mission Failure token is added to the center of the table. If a player’s Diplomat is defeated during the game, that player reveals their Allegiance card and may continue to play if they have other characters remaining.

Winning the Game:

If all of the Rebel Scum Allegiance cards are revealed before the players have accumulated 3 Mission Failure tokens, then the Imperial Loyalists win.

If the players ever accumulate 3 Mission Failure tokens, then the Rebel Scum win.
