Card Dissection: Backup Muscle (AW99)

Welcome everyone to another rendition of Card Dissection. Today, I will feature, in my opinion, one of the best Yellow cards in the set: Backup Muscle.

Ability

Backup Muscle is a Support that costs one resource to play and enters with three damage counters on the card. It has the Action keyword that when exhausted can move one damage counter to a character bypassing any shields. Wait, what? You read that right. If Darth Vader (AW10) has three shields and he is at 12 life, you can exhaust this card to take him down. This card is incredibly powerful and can be used to great effect. The value for three damage and the ticking time bomb this cards represents can possibly put your opponent on tilt.

Cost

The fact you can spend one resource to do three damage over time is just bonkers. There aren’t too many cards that can currently stop Backup Muscle so the benefits for its low cost is quite high. If you are running Yellow cards, this should be a heavily considered card you run a set of in your deck.

Deck Options

Honestly, there aren’t too many decks that shouldn’t run a set of this card in their deck. Perhaps you may come across a couple decks but due to the small card pool currently in the game, you should expect Backup Muscle to be played if your opponent is running a Yellow villain character. The power level of this card is great considering its low cost and what it does. It is more than likely a guaranteed three points of damage. This card is a common and finding them via trade or boosters shouldn’t be too difficult. If playing this card, watch your opponent shift a little uneasy in their chair or even groan somewhat once it hits the field. I know I die a little inside when I see this card played on me. The beauty of this card is breathtaking and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Art

The art from this card is quite fitting to the name. In Star Wars: The Force Awakens these guys “backed up” Bala-Tik (AW19) when confronting Han Solo (AW46). I love the thematic feel this art has with the card. Being new to Star Wars with the level of fanaticism most of the community already has, I am excited for the future of the game.

Final Thoughts

There is very little to find wrong with this card. It is a common and its availability will be easy to obtain It costs one resource and can be played turn 1 with little worries to a tempo loss. You feel as if you have the upper hand when dealing damage each turn. Early to late game Backup Muscle is never a bad choice of resource management. Opponents tend to play differently when this card is out. Sometimes they just give up on a character and not put down upgrades which gives you an advantage over time. Alway remember to not forget about this card. Exhaust it every chance you can. Do not let that “free” damage slide. Also, shields are less scary and one point of damage could sneak by to defeat a shielded character. This is my favorite non-die card of the set. I absolutely love this card from top to bottom.

What do YOU think of this card? Let me know your thoughts in the comment section. Thanks everyone for taking the time to follow along.

  1. If Darth Vader (AW10) has three shields and he is at 12 life, you can exhaust this card to take him down.

Wouldn’t you need 3 rounds to take him down?

Can you play all 3 damage on action? or do you need to wait for each round?

    Confused.
