Ruben’s TTS League Report – Episode I

Hello fellow dice throwers! Welcome to the TTS League Report for the most incredible game in this galaxy called Star Wars: Destiny. In this article and subsequent ones I will discuss each game I play against in the league tournament. I plan to discuss my initial thoughts, how the game went, any changes I plan to do for each round, and my final thoughts. I also want the reader to keep in mind that i am using only the cards I own in my collection. I suppose I can maximize each card but I know that in a real tournament if I don’t have the card, I cannot use it.  The Tournament Organizer told all players they can switch out decks in between games and/or cards. I plan to tweak my deck but not change it to a new one.

So let’s get on with the show….

Round 1

Initial Thoughts

My first opponent was Boba Fatt. We are in Group D and agreed to play our two games back to back. This would ensure we didn’t have to seek each other out to finish our set. We got situated on the game and loaded our decks up.
I was playing eGrievous/Jango and he was playing  eVader/Raider deck. I have heard about this deck talked about on many Facebook groups as well as the Discord channels. This is the first time I played against this deck and I was kind of nervous. People have told me that I should target Raider first or Vader first. The first game I went after Raider.
Not the smartest plan I have ever tried.

Gameplay

Game 1 was a lesson learned in not doing research about all the decks I would face and what to expect. I guess I was very excited about playing in this event I forgot to do my homework.
He won the die roll and elected to go first. He claimed Frozen Wastes as his battlefield and I put one shield on each of my characters. I mulliganed for some early aggression and didn’t get much help. I got a Backup Muscle out at least and I felt better. This is one of my favorite cards of the game. My opponent was having a great time on his end. He played two early Force Chokes and I felt my neck stiffen. I kid you not his rolls were casino ready and Vader was on boss mode rolling 3x on both dice. Grievous was the target early and often. I was focusing on Raider getting it down as fast as possible while Vader was toying with Grievous. Vader’s discard effect didn’t appear to hurt me much in the game but this left me fewer chances to reroll. Since he played blue, he had Use the Force in his bag of tricks and he used it offensively shifting his die to max damage and the beatdown continued.

The Raider had maybe one upgrade before I took it down. HIs ability was used once I believe in the first game. I would say it was a decoy more than anything. Grievous died the turn after. Vader’s health was still in great shape while Jango was moderately damaged. The game lasted less than 30 minutes. This is a good showing since the rules for the league was that each game had a 60 minute time limit.  At least there were some positives of that game. Jango did have a Flame Thrower on him. I was able to resolve 4x damage by paying a resource.  I also had four supports: Backup Muscle x2, Underworld Connections, and Infamous. I won’t make any excuses for my loss but the dice gods were not watching over me.  A turn later he killed Jango off and we prepared for second game.

Game 2 I changed my strategy. It wasn’t anything too different in game 1 except I would focus all my damage efforts to killing off Vader. This game was more competitive than the last. I felt like I had a good chance to win this one.
Not so much.

I won the dice roll and claimed his battlefield again. I proceeded to put 1 shield on each of my guys and got ready to play second. He played an early Sith Holocron while my first turn I got out a Backup Muscle. I was doing some damage to Vader in the game. I was watching Raider but he wasn’t doing too much until later. The 13 health that Vader has is very daunting. It feels as if you are climbing an upward hill. He resolved a Sith Holocron on his turn for a Mind Probe. This combo is quite powerful on its own but on Vader, it’s even more dangerous. As the game progressed I was getting Vader closer to lethal.  I was able to put two Flame Throwers on Jango late game. Vader still killed Grievous first and it kept his death streak to two games. At the end of the game and it was close, I got Vader to 12 health and Raider may have a few points of damage. I claimed the battlefield exhausting all avenues and removing one Vader die.  Jango was at 8 health. I had a Backup Muscle with one damage counter on it. I felt great I would kill Vader next turn. Well, that didn’t happen. He had two cards in his hand with two dice out. One was a Vader die and another die from Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber. Anyone want to take a guess what he rolled on his first discard? If you guessed 3x and +2x, you win. This is exactly what happened. So he killed my Jango and my dreams of salvaging this set of games. He told me later that was the best dice he has ever rolled in one game. I thanked him and said I am glad it was me. We laughed and wished each other luck in the tournament and ended our session.

Changes

My plan is to use the TTS League to get better and learn my deck as I go. I will make subtle changes online and see how the deck transforms over the course of the event. So for my first changes this is what I did:

-1 Ace in the Hole (AW92)
-1 Tactical Mastery (AW74)
+2 He Doesn’t Like You (AW97)
The AiTH didn’t really do much for me as a one of and perhaps the card is great but with this build currently it was underwhelming. Tactical Mastery is a great card but I feel as if my slots were better served with another card. I think adding HDLY can turn a heavy swing in my favor and it costs zero resources. I will try this and see what it does for me next time.

Final Thoughts

After playing two games with this deck online I know that I do not have much to go on with playtesting but I have played more games with my local community. I can see the strength of the cards as I play them over and over again. I know some cards are okay but not great. I think Vader is very strong and I should have targeted him Game 1. I also know that Backup Muscle is my favorite card. I think my deck has potential. I am not getting dominated so that is a good start.  Overall I think my deck will continue to adapt as I progress through this tournament. I think I will be replacing Comlink and Promotion in the near future and trying to add some Jetpacks hopefully after some trades.

Thank you for taking the time to read along and may the Force always roll in your favor!
