Card Dissection: Rey’s Staff (AW44)

Welcome everyone to another card dissection brought to you by Amanda. It is an exciting time in Destiny right now and a lot of spoilers have been revealed. Before I tackle one of the many cards that have been revealed, I would like to take a step back. This past Tuesday at Pre-worlds I got a chance to play some demo games. During my games there was one card that stuck out to me at the event and that is the card that I would like to talk to you about today. Without farther to do, let’s get into [infopopup tag=aw044]

Awakenings 44 - Rey's Staff

[infopopup tag=aw044] is a very interesting card that combos well with Rey and any other modified melee heavy card. This is helped due to the fact that one half of it’s die sides is melee damage. Even with one of those sides costing a resource, it is 3 damage and is worth paying the resource. Right out of the gate, you have a card that is rolling a damage side pretty often due to it’s sides… but there are other sides on this dice. The next side of the die I would like to talk about is it’s resource side. This side is always good to have because of how limited getting resources can be in Destiny. If you decide to resolve the credit side, you can use it later to pay for that heavy damage side or anything else you may want to do with it. The last non-blank side is a special that when you resolves it, it allows you to remove a die showing damage. This is die removal, which will help you in your game. You can remove a heavy damage side, remove a die that your opponent is trying to roll something special on if it is showing a damage side, or to bait them into doing something about your die. If your opponent chooses to focus on your die it can slow them down by taking their action to take care of your die, or taking their action to play around it instead of doing something to build their board state. Overall, the die sides are not bad. This is more of your offense card that you don’t have to relay on another card’s die sides to resolve and it’s non-blank sides are always going to be useful.

Overall I like this card. However even though I like it, to me I don’t think it will see much play. I most likely will be wrong about that, but with a limited card pool right now, we have to wait and see. Being two cost does slow this card down a bit in some decks, but it is a great card to have on the board to give you that boast early in the game that you can overwrite later for a bigger, more key effect. Keep this card in mind and look for combos beyond just putting this card with [infopopup tag=aw038].
