Shaping Destiny – Issue 4: Community

It’s time for the fourth issue of Shaping Destiny. In this issue, we will be breaking down community and what it means in Destiny. Before we do however, let’s first look at the definition of it.

Community is: a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Destiny is game where there are many important parts in it.  Being a healthy game and community is one of these part. Without community, the game wouldn’t be able to grow, no one would be able to learn as much, and the game would get boring. Community is a key part of the gaming experience that a lot of people tend to brush off or ignore. The point of this issue to address community as an important aspect of the game that should be acknowledged and respected just like the rules.

Destiny is a collectible card and dice game and, just like other games, it requires interaction with other people to enjoy. This is achieved by finding people who also enjoy the game and interacting with them. This, in turn, produces a community of people who are interested in the game who get together to play the game and talk about it.  However, Destiny stands out because it is collectible. In addition to what I’ve mentioned before, this game also includes an aspect of community that is unique: trading. Trading is something that provides situations outside of playing with a person or hanging out talking about the game. It creates the opportunity to interact with other people who you normally wouldn’t interact with and, if you choose to, go beyond just trading. However, to maximize the social portent of community building, it is important to not take advantage of that other person. If you are kind to them in the trading process, that positive interaction will more likely encourage them to become an active part of the community. I would recommend being proactive by seeking out trades beyond items you may need to plant those seeds, even if you don’t agree on the trade.

Trading is not the only way to build community. Information is another way and arguably a bigger part of community. The exchange and availability of information is an essential part of growing a game. This is made possible by forums and groups where information can be found, however without interaction there is no growth. We as humans love learning and finding things out however we are social animals as well. If I go to a place to find information and there is little to no interaction, I am going to be less involved in that place compared to a place where there are more interactions. This is important to know if you belong to forums or group. Be active from time to and let someone who is new know that people are here and they are willing to engage and I assure you that will help a person to likely come back and do the same. I say this knowing full well that not everyone is going to be active, however, I encourage those who are to do so. If you can be active, you can help build that place as a community of people who are fans and players. This is important to have places like this.

It is good if you can make a place of community for individuals who like Destiny, but it doesn’t mean anything if it closed off to people whom you think don’t belong. Gaming has always been seen to fit into a mold of attracting certain types of people, however gamers come in all different molds. This is where it is important to make the community that you are apart of open and accepting to everyone. This will make the community a better and more diverse place, while growing the game. Yes, it can be frustrating dealing with someone who may not know much about the game or aren’t that good, but that doesn’t mean that their interest and passion about the game is less. Keep your community open, accepting, and friendly to new people and I promise you, it will grow.

As you can tell in previous points, being active and engaging goes a long way in build community. Without community a game cannot survive. Do your part and, at the very least, be open to approach by people, and support however you can. Whether it be via joining groups, responding in forum, attending get togethers, or any other way you can think of, participate. I can not stress how important is creating community is in a game. I’ve played many games and the ones that I enjoyed most were the ones that had the most involved communities. I’ve met long time friends, went places I couldn’t go alone, experienced things I wouldn’t have been able to otherwise, and lastly have grown as a better person in what I’ve learned. Community will be different from person to person, however I encourage you to be active and if you do you’ll be amazed at what can happen in Destiny but to you as well.
