Shaping Destiny – Issue 2: Probabilities

Hello everyone and welcome back to Shaping Destiny. In this issue I will be talking about probabilities in Star Wars Destiny. Before I do that let’s first get the meaning of what probability is.

Probability is: the extent to which something is probable; the likelihood of something happening or being the case.

As with many games, probabilities plays a part in an approach to this game for those who like to break a game down and take their gaming to the next level. Knowing what the probabilities are and making moves according is an advanced skill that can take you to the next level of gameplay but by no means guarantees victory. Probabilities in this game can consist of many factors including but not limited to dice rolls, cards in opening hand, drawing cards you need, and much more. In this issue we will be talking about probabilities in relation to dice and cards.

Probabilities and Dice:

This game is unique because it includes dice in its gameplay, which is important in the working of the game itself. However, unlike many other card games, the odds of a single die roll is in no way limiting. The dice in Destiny provide options with usually one element that is a certain dead option, which is a blank die roll. However, having said that there are sides, of a die that, in situations, could become just as useless; such a special side of which you can not use the effect, a boost (+) side that requires the roll from another die being the same, or a side that requires a resource. This is import to note in building your deck and deciding which dice to roll. When looking at a card with a die to add to your deck it is important to note what it’s die has to know how useful it is in its probabilities in provide options. One side of a die has a 16% of hitting, This is the important number in knowing how useful a die is. Most dice has a 80% chance of giving you an option without accounting for other possible dead sides. Dice with boost sides (+) can be helped by including other dice in your deck with sides that match the boost sides (+) so you are more likely to be in a situation to resolve them. An easy answer for this is to run a character card who has a boost side (+) with two sides if able. Another thing to remember in rolling dice is that this game includes mechanics that allow dice to be re rolled. While each die roll has the same probability, in rolling the same side again and again, the probability of rolling the same side in a roll decreases. So re rolling that blank should be in your favor to roll to a side with an option you can use, however this can cost a card discard if you choose this option. Learning the probabilities of rolling a die with the most options you can use and making your rolls consistent with your strategies by including dices that have the best probability of rolling options you can use is a wonder tool to have under your belt

Probabilities and Cards:

As important as dice are in this game, this game also includes cards. This also adds probability in of itself due to its random nature. However unlike dice the odds are a lot different due to the limit of card being including in your deck being two, the deck being 30, and drawing up to five each turn.  While it can be quite simple to think “The more cards I go though the sooner I can hit a card I am looking for” it is also important to note that the more cards you go though, the sooner you can run out of cards and come closer to defeat. Each card is 3% of your deck, 6% if you run a playset (two of the same card) and increase as the number of the cards in your deck decreases. While these are low numbers, it is important to look at other figures such as the probability of getting a particular card in your opening hand. Looking at that number we have a more positive figure at 16%, 28% if you include a playset. This sounds like a wonderful number, however, it is important not to count on one card but multiple cards as options as to increase the odds of you getting a card you want in your opening hand. The mathematics of this is full of excitement for those who want to dive into this even deeper. The are other figures to account for with cards such as cards paid for with credits, Upgrades/Events/Support cards in deck, and more. I barely touched the surface of this but I encourage you to look at the figures when building your deck to maximize the probabilities in your favor.

Probabilities in other areas:

Before I close this issue, I would like to acknowledge other probabilities in this game. This game involves two players and while you may have your deck probabilities down, your opponent has their deck with their own probabilities that in turn not only does your probabilities compete with but can influence yours such as discard effects, re roll cards, and other fun treats. Accounting for all your opponents’ probabilities is impossible without knowing their deck, but maximizing yours by planning for as many probabilities you can, can help you fair better.  But wait there’s more, you also have probabilities of matching up strategies, probabilities of deck combinations, and so much more.

In Closing:

This game filled with so much probabilities that it is truly exciting how much there is underneath the surface if you dig. Even if you can build a deck and make it consistent with your strategy, every roll or card drawn is going to be different on a level that perhaps other card games don’t provide. While I recommend looking at the probabilities in your deck, I also know that you are not going to catch everything. Learn and know probabilities and with that knowledge you can truly help shape your Destiny.
